update   me and bro spent day building hide (well i built he supervised lol ) looks good only had time to spend a few minutes in there but things came close, no pigeons yet though     another

just leave the wood alone for a week or so and they will soon be back, maybe spill a bit of grain about the place to encourage them a bit

you dont need camo to shoot pigeons or any thing else really just drab clothes and sit still, leave your gun at home and just go sit in the wood and watch, tuck your self into the bottom of a tree and spend a few hours at different times of the day over a few days looking to see where the birds fly into the wood, which trees they land in and which ones they use as they move further into the wood and which they use as sitty trees, look for droppings and feathers under the trees, go at different times of the day, first light, lunch time and evening and spend a few hours watching from a distance and learn the flight lines the birds use to and from the wood, have patience and watch watch watch, and practice shooting up into trees plenty of conkers and what not to practice on around now the summer is moving on

spend three weeks watching and learning how the ground works and one day shooting and you will bag more

and one top tip, when a bird comes in to land in a tree all its attention is focused on where its going to land so raise your gun to your shoulder as the bird is landing on the branch and have the cross hairs on it by the time its finished flapping about and it wont have chance to see the movement you make and you will be ready to shoot as soon as its settled

good luck

cheers

thanks Hyperion will definitely be spending some time watching from my hide :) might have 2 leave bro at home with gun lol he has no patience. hopefully should be getting plenty in the trees to try out your tips on :)

another question (i know, how can there be any more? no.gif) how do you cook pigeons best? the ones we shot i took the breast meat off then used a meat tenderizer on them and quickly fried them. is that a good way or are there better ones?

loads of ways to cook em

use like beef (if you shoot enough) in stews or pies, spatchcock them, pluck and draw the bird then use game shears to cut down either side of the spine and flatten the bird out then fry or grill

personal favorite at the mo is take the breast meat off and just roll it in some crushed black pepper corns with a little salt then shallow fry with some onions and mushrooms for about a minute (or less) a side, then take then pigeon out leaving the onions and shrooms in the pan and pour in a good glug of red wine or port or brandy or all three if its christmas let it reduce a little then take it off the heat return the pigeon to the pan and crumble in a bit of stilton (if you want to make it even richer whip the livers out of the birds and blitz the up and add when you put the stilton in) heat gently as the stilton melts then add a bit of double cream if you want and serve poured over a slice of crusty brown toast!

Yep, luckily for me I was warned about putting hunting gear in the washer before I actually got around to it.

Modern washing powders are a killer for your hunting skills :wallbash: Softener is also to be avoided as it smells good to us, but is like a huge warning to our quarry

keep an eye out for sitty trees, trees that flocks of them sit in reguarly, once you find these sit under neath them and wait for them to come. I always find pigeons extremely hard to get close to, to shoot but mainly stick to bunnies. good luck

lol speaking of camo me and bros arrived yesterday fitted me fine but large on him was massive biggrin.gif visited our permission ive never seen so little life on a farm blink.gif saw a few pigeons and that was it kinda disappointing but in a few weeks they say they will be harvesting the rapeseed so then we should have more luck

thanks for all the advice

Large on me is small!

That kit is a very good buy really for people like us that are on a tight budget  should last for many years.

Guess your brother will have to grow into his kit.

The bonus part of that kind of gear is that the lining will nuetralise any body odour so it wont stink :gunsmilie:

But Please remember Chris,

DON'T let your mam stick them in the washing machine EVER!

It will ruin the machine  and your mam will batter you good and proper :wallbash: In fact tell her to read this post, then your covered!

Oh and dont wear white shirts underneath the top! They come out rather grey!

Hi mate

your bro has a hw30 what gun do you have? of course it goes without saying you've got to get 9/10 pellets in a 1" circle before you start shooting live quarry becasue nobody likes to wound. your hide looks very good but even if you have body camo you got to remeber that your face will stick out like a sore thumb so get a dull coloured hat (olive/brown) and a scrim scarf off ebay (very cheap. what i do is double over the scrim scarf then wrap it around my face until there are 2 corners on the crown of my head then i put the cap on and it holds it in place. then you can part the scarf around the eyes so you can see through.
