zini & i met up again wednesday

Recommended Posts

Hi every one

As you all know zini & I met up over a couple of evenings this week, well this is the second part of that week. And what a second part it was!

Si needed to get some footage for his upcoming spring rifle DVD, so where better place to take him was to a permission I haven’t been to for about 6/8 weeks due to work commitments. I arrived at around 5:15pm and Si got to me about 6:05pm bringing with him a mini rain storm, im sure he is still on the dark side lol.

After a zero session we checked our kit, and I showed Si the boundaries stuck a radio in his hand and said fill ya boots! But not before showing him all the hotspots so he could get the footage he required. as we was walking down a lane I spotted a couple of bunny’s out on the other side of a bank, which I stalked over to while Si filmed I think! I got ready to take the shot and ranged it at 34yds so on my zero I went through my normal procedure took up the first stage then second THWUCK missed by a mile and another missed again! So just another quick check on a small wooden stub and it was out!

So I said to Si ill go and check it again at the back of the property and you carry on, while pointing out there’s one! And of he headed in the direction I pointed

As I was walking back up the lane, I see movement in the not so long grass and quickly got sight of a pair of ears, down on one knee ranged at 28yds took aim little squeak so it raised its head THWACK! Over it went

So I still wasn’t convinced every thing was ok, and I headed back up to the back of the property to fine tune the zero.

Im on my way back up and the radio goes! “Hi ya pal got one†fantastic! Was my reply

I got to my spot five minutes later radio goes again! “Got another†ok im thinking well done beginners luck! (New permission and all that LOL) and I carried on with my zero which I got sorted after six shots ,so not much out really I think I missed while under pressure of being filmed lol.

Any way I was making my way round to the front of the property and spotted a bunny at 120yds so my stalk was on using the old stone wall and high flower bed as my cover as I move like a ninja lol, I get with in 90yds of my target and it sees me I freeze! For about five minutes while its having a good look around and feeling a bit nervous. And then the five minutes are over (which felt like thirty minutes) and it’s back grazing. So I decided to not loose this target and my crawl was on! Ten yds later it looked like I was going to loose it and it jolted a few yds towards me, so I waited for a while till it got comfy grazing again, and decided to take the shot! I ranged it and put 3.5mildots on the targets kill zone, breathing under control nice and relaxed as this was a long range shot! Took up the first stage second THWACK!! Bunny dose a back flip and down dead! I was a very pleased hunter!

Where it fell

Where the shot was taken from

I went over to pick up my prize shot! And made my way down the fence line to where the big badger! Hole is as im creeping down the fence I see two bunnies’s running around like two five year olds full of energy! And then I catch movement out of my eye it was big ole bill the badger! So I sat and watched for a while, also it would give the two bunnies time to calm down and relax. And do what they are suppose to be doing grazing and keeping there head still for me to knock em over lol

After watching the badger I carried on towards where I had seen the two bunnies earlier, and they were no where to be seen. But then I got thinking that they may be stooping in the not so long grass, so my eyes were firmly scouting the grass with every step. I must have walked thirty yds, then I get a glimpse of a dropped back ears and a nice big brown eye, no more than ten yds away, another step and it would have been off!

So slowly I lent against the iron fence railing

and raised my AAS410K .177 very slowly as it was watching my every move I took aim and had to make a quick mind reminder that im using .177 so one mildot hold over yes! Hold over, it’s the same hold over as if I was taking a target at forty five yds and that is the only hold over for the ranges between 10yds & 45yds ranges! Any way kill zone on target squeeze THWACK!!! Not a twitch.

As im heading back towards Si, im on the radio to him to see how he is doing!

His reply was “13 down here†so I say you see thirteen “no! I got 13†DOH!! As I turn green with envy lol so I replied your going to need a hand to carry! Those all back up so like a good pack horse of I went

After the photo shoot lol

We headed back for a cuppa coffee and a choclit biccy, then after a spot of lamping!

As the radios died of power we stuck together and had a wonder around, then Si had spotted one and went to stalk it, I spotted one as was on my way too the target! I walked very slowly towards the direction I see it in quick flash a red jewel was still there, up came the AAS410K .177 took aim THWACK!!!

Where it fell

I carried on walking around and keeping in shouting distance of Si for safety reasons

Hi lads,

I’ve got to say a huge thank you again to Davy for yet again giving me the real VIP treatment on yet another brilliant 10 acre permission  .

I really enjoyed myself, and it’s so nice to help Davy out by breaking his personal best in regards to shooting bunnies in one session :victory: .

For me to shoot 18 bunnies and a hare was a real treat.

Davy has actually toned his side of the post down considerably, but I would like to add on his behalf that he managed a shot in the day time that knocks the hell out of my personal best ever long shot by 10 metres :notworthy: .

I’m not going to post the exact range as some people get upset as previously stated in other posts of mine, but suffice to say it was an extreme shot :o .

He also took many 40 plus metre shots either from the standing or kneeling position in the night time when I was lamping with him ;) .

This kind of skill needs to be worked at over many hours, days and weeks to perfect it like Davy has done.

He’s a credit to this forum section and an inspiration to us all  .

I did change to the .22 r10 for the 2 hours of lamping that we did Jack but only managed 1 more bunny mate. Davy was killing them faster than i could follow him ;) so I never had time to shoot many more :icon_redface: .

It just goes to show that a PCP isn’t always your answer to a massive bag when lamping rabbits.

I think that the Weihrauch HW97KT springer produced some lovely kills in the day time and would have also still got the 1 rabbit i shot at 25 metres at night.

I found it very difficult to guestimate the range to the bunnies at night with the .22 and must of missed either 2 or 3 bunnies either over the top or under their chins mate :censored: .

That problem has just been solved though buddy as I pick up my brand new Air Arms S400 in .177 tomorrow morning which I’m going to fit a nice Nikko Stirling low magnification variable power scope to and a Hawke laser to use as my range finder :whistling:

The .177 should make the error in range at night a lot more forgiving.

Here is some of the footage that I shot from my static position and from a bit of leopard crawling.
