Feral Pig Snares/traps

Recommended Posts

I have an issue with a large feral pig population on an island, community are not allowed to use firearms. What would be the best snare design for a large pig up to 150kg? I was thinking a drag snare, loop of cable attached to an old log or car rim! We have limited success with silo traps as the locals nick the pigs, as they know where the traps are set. Snares could be more hidden , any suggestions?

PERSONALLY MATE ,

I WOULD GO FOR FOOT SNARES AS WELL AS NECK ......

DRAGS ARE A GOOD IDEA IN AN AREA WHERE A CATCH CAN BE FOUND , A CAR RIM IS NO GOOD AT ALL

THE DRAG WILL NEED TO BE SOMETHING WHICH WILL TANGLE , A LENGTH OF STEEL ANGLE ABOUT 6 FEET LONG WITH THE SNARE FIXED DEAD CENTRE WILL WORK AS LONG AS ITS HEAVY ENOUGH

I WOULD BAIT AN AREA FIRST AND GET THEM FEEDING BEFORE SETTING THE TRAILS

Thanks for the tips guys, dogs are a bit of a nuisance, not so much as the dogs but its a problem in the village no one locks up there dogs, they wander all over the island, pigs are pretty weary. I have caught 6 so far in the silo trap (just a round ring of builders mesh that they can push into but can't get out of. Coconuts are the best bait, they go spare over it! Will try the wire noose and drag bar for the sneaky ones! Cheers again. "Kasa Por Yarn" http://kasaporyarn.wordpress.com/2010/06/24/episode-11/

after watching their buddies get caught they will learn to avoid traps & teach their young the same. so yeah dogs are going to be important. also can you legally use bows, good for shooting over bait and no noise to alert anyone to whats going on.

Thanks Guys,

for your comments, dogs are fine if I could rely on the locals to do it right, island communities are a different mob up here in the Torres, I have considered using a bow, just got to get the right one and teach myself how to use it, there is some restriction I believe here in Queensland but I will suss that out. I have discovered some great wollows near a natural spring that appear to be their favourite haunt. A good spot for a blind, and a stack of coconuts which is there favorite bait. The local council which controls the island as well as the traditional owners are dead against firearms in the communitie for obviuos reasons. Good hunting.
