Welsh Shows in Late July & Early August

Recommended Posts

Friends from America are visiting cousins in South West Wales & will be there until just after the end of the month. Unfortunately, I am based on the other side of the Bristol Channel & therefore not really in touch with the Welsh hunting & shows scene.

Ideally, they would like to attend a hound show while they are there, but Peterborough, Dunster & Honiton are really too far away. I have told them about the Towy & Cothi Hound Show this coming Saturday, 17th July, at Rhandirmwyn Show Field near Llandovery, but they may not have recovered from the flight by then.

Does anyone know if & when Cynghordy Show is "on" & whether its attractions are likely to warrant a drive of 50 miles each way?

Also, does anyone know which, if any, of the following agricultural shows is most likely to have much of interest to hunting folk - Cardigan County (Wednesday 28th July), Trapp (Saturday 31st July), Nevern (Wednesday 4th August) & Fishguard (Friday 6th August)?

Hi Cynghordy Show is on 14th August. We (Towy & Cothi)Will have a pen of our hounds there and there is a couple of hound classes but we probable will be the only hounds competing.

Did your friends come to our show on saturday?

Towy & Cothi,

I have not heard whether my friends came to your show as they have not been in email or telephone contact since &, since the cousin/host’s name is Jones & she lives in SW Wales, there is not much help to be had from the telephone directory website.

In fact, I suspect they will not have gone as they will only have arrived in Wales the day before the Show. They were planning to be at the Royal Welsh this week (which is why I did not mention it in my original post). No doubt they will have a chance to speak to people on one or other of the sporting stands to find out which of the smaller shows is likely to be worthwhile in terms of the trade-off between interest & travelling time, though no doubt the Welsh weather will play a part in any decision.

Thanks for the information on Cynghordy, though it seems that with only one pack of hounds showing, my friends will probably give it a miss.

Topper,

Dunster Country Fair (not to be confused with the Dunster Show) is, of course a lovely event & there will be very many hounds there & it will include the usual excitement (& occasional confusion) of the Five Couple Class. I certainly intend to be there.

The problem is that the visiting Americans will be staying on the Pembrokeshire/Carmarthenshire border so the journey time for them would be a lot more than 1½ hours you suggest as the distance is over 175 miles via the Severn Bridge which would suggest that even with so much of the journey on the M4 & M5 the journey time each way would be around 3½ hours.

We will have a hound show at the Heart of Wales Game Fair August 14th 15th

After the show Nick Valentine hunts the Gorse banking with his rabbit hunting hounds

In the evening in the shed we will have a horn blowing competition

Not the biggest show only but we are growing

Which evening (Saturday 14th or Sunday 15th) is Nick Valentine bringing his Ryeford Chase Griffon Vendéen Bassets for the rabbit hunt after the Show? Or is it on both evenings?

Also which evening is the horn blowing competition?

Whilst I appreciate that the timing of events at a Game Fair is always likely to slip due to unforeseen circumstances, would it be possible to give an indication of the planned timings of the various events at the show & also of the rabbit hunt & horn blowing competition? After all, those coming from a distance could well be disappointed to miss, or have to miss, those events in which they were most interested.

In that connection, I note that the morning trains from Swansea on the Saturday arrive at Builth Road (½ a mile away) at 6.46, 10.43 & 11.23 whilst on Sunday the first train does not arrive until 15.23. From Shrewsbury, the only morning trains arrive at 7.01 & 10.43 on the Saturday whilst the first train only arrives at 13.50 on the Sunday. The last trains from Builth Road on the Saturday are the 19.43 to Swansea or the 20.24 to Shrewsbury, whilst the last trains on the Sunday are the 18.01 to Swansea or the 17.39 to Shrewsbury.

  • 2 weeks later...

We would look to start the Hound show between 1.00 and 2.00 dependant on traffic and there is a show on beforehand using the ring so it all depends on dog numbers.

The rabbit hunt will be on completion of the show.

We will announce it in plenty of time to allow followers to position themselves prior to him setting off

we are also looking to do a horn blowing competition Huntsmen only halfway through the show

The very popular Amateur Lady and Childrens Horn blowing competition will be in the bar at about 10 oclock Saturday Night
