Out today

[OHIO STEVE 11]

I believe I am required to say that I am in the states and everything pictured is perfectly legal.......................PART 1 I haven't been out for a while due to an injury then laziness John O wanted to get out so we set up to go dig this morning with my brother......John showed up about 10:30 and him and I got started alone and My bro joined us later...John has a black dog named CAIN, he is nothing to look at but a pretty solid little dog. He was bred to a bitch named BLACK MILLIE and I have a pup from that breeding that is 9 months old named LUCY....So JOHN had CAIN and I had his daughter LUCY. We went to a ditch line that had corn down both sides and we expected it to be crawling with coons. we hunted for a while with no luck and FINALLY Cain entered a small hole and grabbed something...we dug to him ( every dig we had today was so shallow and so short that we never needed the locator box.) and he had a medium sized opossum

 

we let my pup take a look at it and at first she was kind of disinterested but got fired up a little and started sticking her head in and checking out the situation

 

We got everything covered back up and JOHN couldn't find his tie out leash . He walked back up the ditch line and I started to follow but my pup was digging at the backfill so I just stood and watched her..She dug the opossum back up and went in and pulled it back out to the entrance

 

 

John finally found his leash and we went on to the next spot...

 

PART 2 when we pulled in a BIG coyote ( at first I thought it was a german sheperd) was standing at the edge of the woods...We got a pistol out for a shot but it trotted back into the woods before we got a chance. At this spot I used a russel bred by KEN BUSHELL named STING , and JOHN took his littermate sister to my LUCY. STing found a really small tight hole under a rock that he liked. It was extremely tight but he will NOT give up on hole that he likes and kept pushing his head in and cork screwing himself trying to get in

 

we opened it up for him and he went in and locked onto an opossum

 

Johns pup was pretty interested in this so we were happy with the 2 pups so far...we went on around this "bowl" and STING found another TINY hole he wanted into

 

we opened up by moving some trash and cement, and while we were doing that Sting was making a lot of noise trying to get through. This got Johns pup interested in what was going on

 

Sting finally got through and we could tell he was on a coon..when we got opened up this is what we saw

 

 

 

 

we dispatched this coon for the land owner and went to another spot

 

 

 

PART 3 while we were at the second spot my brothwer FINALLY Showed up and brought his CASPER dog ( a russell) we went to one of my bros spots and walked our asses off with no luck. we then went to another ditch line and went a ways before CAIN entered up under a push pile of rotten logs and dirt

 

I did not get a pic of this opossum but we got it and had to destroy it due to damage.

we were loading the dogs up when CASPER started barking right by the trucks. He was half in a hollowed out spot under a BIG piece of concrete ( a 3X# square about 10 feet long) and right beside this piece was another about as big...he was between the two so we opened it up and pulled him back to see what he had and ....ANOTHER OPOSSUM!

 

someone forgot to tell this one he was supposed to play dead.

I held onto Casper and had em get the pups and they did a very good job for 9 month old babies.

 

we let Casper pull it on out

 

we let the pups have a rag then called it a day

yes..a big coon can be VERY savage and will take the fight to the dog. We don't get REALLY big ones here but any over 20+ pounds can put up a good scrap. The damage from one however is puncture type wounds whereas a groundhog will break stuff up on a dog and slash them more in my opinion.

I am very fortunate to live in this area...theres ground work about anywhere you go. A friend and I in one summer using 5 dogs dug 289 groundhogs PLUS a BUNCH of coon and opossum...He had a russell that we quit counting at 500 coons he had been on ( dug and in barns and abandoned houses)

 

good read, well done wouldnt mind some of that pest control my self.

The good thing about doing terrier work here is that the farmers will call you and ask you to come and hunt..in 20+ years with the terriers I have had 3 people refuse to let me hunt.

My oldest son is 20...I had my first russells when my wife was pregnant with him ( I think) at one time for a stretch I had a buddy who lived close and we were digging 6-7 days a week, so I have been out a LOT.....I have NEVER dug a fox!!!! I have seen a pair bolted while digging in CANADA but someone elses dog....and I was on a dig when one bolted ( again someone elses dog...the joys of being a working judge lol) but I was digging and didn't see it.
