butcherboy 68
When I have a 8 week cocker pup (another one coming at the end of the month ) I tend to keep it in a cage in my house for the 1st month.(Of course it does get let out ) It gets longer & longer periods in the outside kennels during the day but comes in at night. I find I can control it's feed far better if I keep it alone. I like to free feed my pups so they can eat when they want apart from at night. I also find i'm more likely to go and play with the pup if it's in my kitchen rather than outside. I did one put a 8 week pup straight in the kennel & it never came inside. The dog had no problems and still bonded great with me. Edited July 14, 2010 by butcherboy Quote Link to post

Either your older dogs can die of stress or more common the pup gets moulled or killed always kennel a pup seperate. Quote Link to post
Guest Buttermilk
I agree.... I never put a young pup in a kennel with older dog/s, unless it is the pup's mother. The pup could end up badly hurt....or worse. Quote Link to post
Lloyd90 509
When I got my 8 week old ESS I put her straight in with my 1 year old lab, both bitches, They play, fight and generally cause havoc enjoying themselves in the garden, house and tonight down the pub lol, but once in the kennel dont do any of that and just go and cwtch up in bed, they have never tried to play with each other in there haha. Weird that is lol Quote Link to post

But i would not put a pup in with an older dog in fear of the older dog killing the pup. Quote Link to post

Wouldn't like to put a time on it mate but it would really depend on how much time your pup spends with the older dog. You would have to be confident that the older 1 wasn't going to get pissed of with a pup nipping at it all night. Maybe you could start to introduce them both to the same kennel for a few hours a day when you are around to listen for signs of trouble. Quote Link to post
Hawkeyethenoo 0
I think you have been given good advice above but I would add another point; a pup kennelled too early with other dogs becomes a doggy dog ( I mean a dog that looks to other dogs for its fun)I want my dog to look to me as its source of fun so that I can get sharper obedience out of the pup. I don't want the pup second guessing my commands by looking to the other dogs to see what they are wanting. I saw this recently on a croft in Lewis where the pup collie who was kennelled outside with its mother was being given the command. It looked to the shepherd and then its dam before choosing between the two. The crofter was my uncle and he also recognised this and decided to work them separetly to sharpen up his controll over each dog individualy. I have seen this in gundogs as well. I hope this also helps in making your decision. As to time I would wait until at least 24 weeks before putting the pups in with the other dogs. My reason for 24 weeks is that this is the window closing time of socialisation. Quote Link to post
