first blood for the eclipse . . .

hi all had a look out with the eclipse yesterday afternoon with the lurcher had a walk around and the dog cought a mixy rabbit wich i left for the fox :sick: decided to go along the woods edge when a magpie landed about 20 yards in front of me wich i stupidly missed i saw a few pheasants but left them well alone then walked over to a massive patch of rodehdendron and decided to do abit of plinking at my red bull can but before i took the shot i heard a flapping of a pigeon landing about 30 yards away so i raised the gun and sqeezed the trigger . . . THWACKdown dropped the bird but no time for celebrating as it had dropped into the rodehdendron patch so i sent the dog in with crossed fingers after about ten minutes he emerged with a flapping woody .wich was immidatley dispatched n

You could be in court for putting that up, what was it the guy and his lad got prosecuted for when the woody didn't die and he didnt finish it off immediately? Causing unnesacerry suffering

 

How can the rest of you guy's congratulate someone on a shot like that

 

RESPECT the fecking quarry, do your best to ensure a clean kill if you can't do that, then get back to the paper punching until you can

 

I know we all have woundings now and again but we strive for the best and 99.999 percent of us would finish it off a hell of a lot quicker than ten minutes.

niether mate went for the upper spine it took the dog a while to find it in the bushes so as soon as i got my hands on it i dispatched it . . .

as i said mate it took the dog a while to find it and as soon as i got my hands in it i dispatched it wich is the best i can do i practice alot with my guns to have a one shot one kill rate and if i hadnt taken the dog then i wouldnt have found it at all . .. atb

have to aggre with the lads on this one, better off going for the head shots, ten minuets is a very long time for the bird to be suffering. and the spine shot odviously failed,

 

good on you for dispatching it asap, but head and neck pal,the way forward.

 

we all get it wroung sometimes and im no different,will happerly put my hands up to that. so please dont think were getting on at you. its just advice pal.

I often take spinal shots when they are the only shot available, but the spine on something as small as a woody it not a great target at that range especially if its a .177 as the margin for error is tiny.

 

That to me is the real advantage of a .22, it narrows the margin for error and causes more shock trauma (because its slower) and much more tissue damage because its bigger.

 

I was perhaps a little overkill with my comments and for that I appologise; however if you had hit the spine then the signals from the brain would not have been able to keep the heart beating, lungs breathing, nor would there have been any signals telling the wings to flap, the bird would have been dead in less than 30 seconds if you had managed to pull off the shot

 

I took a very long range shot at a woody today but details of that will be in the write up

 

Fitchet, I am glad you have taken onboard the advice regarding head and neck shots. I would advise you to read Si's (Zini) thread about shooting on an incline and also follow the link to the flash demo that I found as it really helpes to visualise what Si is talking you through
