border terriers

Recommended Posts

I know a lad who keeps a few and are good grafters. A bit on the silly hard, as opposed to sensible hard to account for a respectable number each season.

If you get the right stuff, of which there is some still about, and not get blinded by these big names that get put about, you can get a decent worker.

Although to be fair, that goes for most types.

a couple of good working borders

Posted Images

ive seen a couple of steady little workers, there not my type of terrier because there very hit and miss they were a doomed breed when the general public became interested in them the same as the bedlington they were bred for shows etc,we have to remember the terriers of today owe alot of there making up from borders in the days of cyril breay and before the likes of joe bowman etc all used them ,i think its a shame that not enough genuine terrier men dont try and get the breed back to what it was and good luck and all the best to them that are trying with them and are succeding ,it does not matter what breed or colour its fur is a worker is a worker and if more folk would realise that instead of taking the piss or snubbing other folk the current working terrier gene pool out there would be far better

did you get it to ground

hard enough finding them to ground in the season nowadays let alone this weather

donny i know what you are thinking i am old enough to know better but just get piss of sorry atuddy i have 5 borders all from working lines

BREEDER I SEE YOU POST REGULAR, BUT NEVER ABOUT HOW YA SEASON WENT OR WHAT WORK YA DOGS HAVE DONE. I'M NOT HAVING A GO AT YA BUT HAVING DOGS FROM "WORKING LINES" DOES NOT CONSTITUTE WORKING DOGS. THE PAST SEASON MYSELF AND MY WORK/DIGGING PARTNER TOOK A PERSON UNDER OUR WING THAT HAS ACCESS TO MANY BORDERS "OUT OF WORKING LINES" AND ANY THAT WE TRIED SPEWED, EVEN WHEN THEY SEEN THE QUARRY THEY DID'NT WANT TO KNOW. THIS BREED IS ALMOST OBSOLETE AS FAR AS WORK GOES, THERE IS A FEW LADS OUT THERE HAS SOME THAT WORK TRUE, BUT AS A DIGGING BREED THEY ARE DONE AND DUSTED. CAN I ASK DO YOU BREED THEM????

i have them , iv said this before, there is a good thread on here somewhere, but as always you try to have a sensible article and some knob comes on and fekss it up, they are biddable and pretty hardy, they can be slow to start but when they do come on, its no half measure, i dont want a dog that you take out and its smashed and cant work for 2months later, they are what i want for terrier, i started with borders, because there were no decent lakies about at the time i wanted one, did,nt want a russel, and the only black dog i ever owed was a bitch i bred from two red lakies, i sent her out on loan, she came on well, but the dick who had her shot her when he gave up,a young bitch who had plenty minerals, but thats another tale,i got my border bitch from mick reagan(digmoor) and bred my dog, i now have a litter here by him, and a will run one or two on, the bitch came rom a friend of mine in county wexford, and has plenty of voice, and niggles her quarry into bolting, they are not everyones cup of tea, but i like em.

great post as usual desertdog this is a man that now his borders imo anyone can enter a stone mad black terrier but it takes a better terrierman to work borders great little terrier

i work my blue&tan dog to ground he has found afew earths over the last 2 seasons.he dont bay alot just gets hold, you get good and bad in all breeds of working terriers, just once i thought for a moment he had thrown the towel in but i was wrong, me and the lad went to a 5 holer that was well kicked out the terrier was keen and in he went, the fox showed but went back so i knew we would get a dig to him, bunpin and thumpin going on, after 5mins or so out came the dog i said to the lad he,s bumped into a big fella, the dog sat on my coat for afew mins got up pissed on it went back to ground and me and my lad dug him out fast to the fox, about 3ft down, you cant dig to every border but the one,s you do, are as good as any other terrier.

from past litters i have bred, i always hoped for a blue tan dog, in this litter i have two, one is goin to my mate in sussex and the other i will run on with a litter sister, i took a pup from a litter two years previous to an earth at the end of last season and the fella who owns her didntthink she,d show, so we put in at the end of the dig, after pulling her mum off and that was all she needed, a little encouragement, job done, not long and we,ll be out again.
