biggest bag of bunnys?

hi zini,

i hate static shooting so nearly everything i do is from stalking/walking up.even with ratting im always on the move even if sitting still is a more effective method.i cant stay still for more than a minute or so.

im not a good shot so my range is from very close upto 25 yards,i wouldnt attempt anything over that because i dont practice at bigger ranges and as a ratter im used to shooting at close range more than long.i have to know my zero at close range because a rat could be just six foot away.

where ive gone rabbit shooting you can be choosy over what you shoot, theres never any need to look for rabbits far away because in the summer your going to be stepping on them.its often a case of having to walk backwards to get it into the scope where you know your range.alot of rabbits can be walked upto,us lurchermen know this

ill agree with rabbits being close and many giving hold under rather than hold over but ratting has made close shooting instinctive.im used to standing shots aswell as i dont like kneeling down in a foot of cow shit :D maybe thats skills ive learnt from shooting thousands of rats over the last eight years but getting close to enough rabbits on my permission in the summer isnt difficult.

but im talking about prime rabbit country here, other places will be different.my ratting spots arent as easy to take rabbits.quite frankly summer shooting is easier than winter on any quarry.theres more about, many of them young and daft and theres alot of cover.this forum section is always filled with loads of summer shooting,in the winter it does ease off. :hmm:

for the record though i know im not a good shot,i have to get within close range of my quarry........so close i could probably hit it over the head with the butt of the gun.

this is the type of land i hunt on,imagine it with a foot of cover on in the summer.

78 one evening about 15 years ago,I don't think i'd shoot that many in one go again as it was a chore collecting them and getting them bact to the motor it was a very hot evening and there was some stench in the car on the way home.

between me and two mates one driving 2 shooting over a sixteen hour session last year we got 112!

that was stalking/static until dark then lamping at night! we took 145 5 weeks later from the same permission with the rimmy's!

this place was over run with them between us and a very hard winter there pretty thin on the ground now. have struggled to get 100 from the same place this year! no pics of that night but i have some of large bags somewhere!

mine is 32 but they werent really sporting, most of them young uns on some game cover just emerging

A kill's a kill in my eye

I don't do it for sport  more pest control that allows me to access land for shooting paper targets (I use the excuse of "I have to make sure the combo is zeroed! but really my sport is destroying bulls eyes)

If I were to shoot bunnies for sport' I'd say young uns were more sporting as they have a smaller brain  thus greater accuracy is required

Good point on smaller brain but also you have to take into account the fact that they are somewhat retarded and notice danger a lot later than the adults. I think many air rifle men shoot from a static position and wait for the rabbits to come to them, so its not so much hunting as living target practice and in this case, you are right, a kit presents a more difficult shot due to brain size and height (or rather lack of) above ground cover.

Your right - i think a lot of the air rifle lads dont like the idea of spending a few hours lying on their belly in the snow.

I did 7 hours on my belly clearing a warren in the cemetery last winter and yes it was in the snow

I'm sick of clearing that same fecking warren!

Clear it of bunnies one day, a few days later another mob of the little sods are in gnawing on the bones :wallbash:

Your right about the lil ones being a bit retarded about noticing danger, but they do learn quick if you miss

different situations require different technipues for example if you want to clear rid a warren of rabbits you have to 'sit static' :whistling:

Yes but generally its more of a challenge and more effective to stalk, oh and it's techniques not technipues :tongue2:

Thats why shooting them in that situation isn't really efficient pest control, if you ferreted it through however and then filled all of the holes and THEN sat out that night with a lamp and air gun and moped up any survivors. . . . . might be a different story. :tongue2:
