Overshooting, just simple inexperience, or something else.

Recommended Posts

Alright folks, hope yar all well, so Lexy's 14 months, done very little, partly due to age and due to few rabbits and permission, anyway lately Ive been hoping of her picking on a few youngsters, get her confidence up, well she's working beautifully, puts them under pressure when they attempt to go to ground, so, doing everything right, until, the rabbit turns, she over shoots every single time ! like ive said, shes had very limited experience, is this normal, and what would you suggest, just time ???

Thanks in advance,

Craig.

Just inexperiance pure and simple mate...the dog will learn to adjust its speed/strike with time.....nearly every young hound goes through this phase when first starting out so its nothing to worry about...atb stabba

all in time mate after a while the lurcher will be able to judge were the rabbit is goin lyk say if the rabbit turns a sharp left while the dog is pressureing it the dog will see and make sharp turn so it cutts it off and hopefully end up with the rabbit the dogs still young u will probly see this happen when u start working the dog hard this winter when its had a good couple of rabbits

Great, I was hoping , you'd say that, she's really interested now, mad for it and has started using her nose so much more, so I know she's developing, were in no rush, we aint got hundreds of rabbits to keep down, just a bit of fun for her and me,others may see this who are in the same boat with a young dog, help them aswell, thanks Stabba and TL, much appreciated,

Craig

I agree with them but have seen dogs that never learn. They just continue to overshoot game their whole lives. Seen it in hounds to when running a track. Seen young ones blow it and then eventually learn to make the pick up but seen some that just had too much swing and never learn. I know of a very fast coyote dog that is really keen and she is probably 5 now and still has a problem of blowing past one on the turn. Might not be a problem on rabbits though ever. They all might learn, I dont know.

Likes been said but sun baked rock hard ground can affect the dogs turning ability and imho wat the dogs bred out of those with a lot of greyhound in them i have found take longer to learn tight turning techniques.

The more work they get , the cleverer they seem, that includes the chase, every dog is different , some learn to pick quick , usually explosive fast dogs,, some will sit tight and put pressure on nearer the hedge , forcing bunnies to try to get in somewhere it cant, had a bitch before, caught most in the hedge not outside. Your probably hyper when your out the bitch, chill out a bit , she'll be picking up on that as well, do you lamp, lamping is the easiest way of developing a dog who figures out the way a rabbit runs

Hi fella's, er, honestly not hyper, very relaxed with her, doesnt matter wether she catch's or not, were only mooching, not done any lamping till this coming season (took advice off here not to start em too young, spent all the time training her) plus there s very few rabbits about, totally with you mate bout ground being hard, so I feel to write that im not really working her, were just walking, and bumping into the odd coney ;)very eager tho,

Thanks

ar I see then, so theres a very good chance that, she may perform better, even with her limited experience, if the going was softer, I see, like I say tho, it's not serious, just walking with her really, roll on autumn, cant believe im saying that !
