Shock as gun licence issued to ten-year-old

CHRISTINA JOHNSON

This picture was supplied by the National Rifle Association which said children taught in a safe environment poses no risk.

A ten-year-old is one of 49 under-18s who hold gun licences in Bedfordshire, we can reveal.

And the projected number of shotgun certificates in the county has more than trebled to 1,095 from last year’s figure of 353.

According to figures released by Bedfordshire Police under the Freedom of Information Act last Wednesday, the youngest person in Bedfordshire to be able to legally fire a shotgun is aged just ten.

We can also reveal the numbers of firearm licences are also expected to be up to 590 this year from 342 last year.

The revelations come a fortnight after two teenagers were jailed for life for killing 22-year-old Richard Long in an ‘execution-style’ shooting in Luton.

Last month former Dunstable College student Jamie Clark, 23, was killed by 52-year-old Derrick Bird, who shot dead 12 and injured 11 people on a rampage through Cumbria.

Anti-gun campaign group Mothers Against Guns has slammed the licensing law and said a ten-yearold should not be allowed to use shotguns.

Lucy Cope, 55, who created the group after her son was shot outside a London nightclub in 2002, said: “It’s completely appalling and I’m really shocked.

“This completely frightens and shocks me.

“Someone could offer a child £100 for their gun and that’s a lot of money for a child. They would give it up.

“People need their heads testing if they’re going to allow a child to have a shotgun certificate.

“Someone needs to take the licence back now. I’d like to thank Luton & Dunstable Express for bringing this to light.

“I would never have known a ten-year-old could have a licence otherwise. It’s absolutely horrendous and I’ll be addressing this in our campaigns.â€

According to the law in England, you have to be 17 or over to apply for a firearms certificate but anyone can apply for a shotgun certificate as long as a parent or guardian signs the form.

Under-14s may use an air weapon on private property under the supervision of someone over the age of 21, but this is not necessary for those aged 14 and above.

Over-14s can possess a firearm or receive one as a gift, but you must be 17 or over to actually buy one.

Chrissie Hall, a co-ordinator for charity Infratrust which supports those affected by gun violence, said: “This is not illegal.

“The issues which worry me regarding youngsters and guns is the risk of suicide or accidental injury which I would assume could be very high when young children are involved.â€

The secretary general for the National Rifle Association, Glynn Alger, said: “There’s no issue if they are supervised and are taught correctly.

Children have this certificate if they’re involved in a serious sport or if they’re with their family.

On second thought I think all guns should be banned in the UK and only the military and the royalty should have guns... No one there seem's mature enough to own a firearm.....No one there really hunts as most of it is just poaching....And the Bobby's are there to protect you from one another so why do you need any gun's - it's a perfect utopia there!

Just joking - I think everyone of sound mind should be armed and ready to defend .....

i think that there is something on the news tonight about this, I dont see how people can critisice young shotgun license holders, alot of them are probably more safe and sensible than some aldults, i have never heard of any young person who legally holds guns who have shot anyone.

The most annoying part of this is the anti gun campaign womans coments:

(Anti-gun campaign group Mothers Against Guns has slammed the licensing law and said a ten-yearold should not be allowed to use shotguns.

its probably people like her dead son that cause problems with guns, black gangs going around shooting each other in london.

she was obviously talking from her experience with her own son when she made the statement that: a child would accept £100 for their gun maybe her son would of.

I think she neads to realise that she has no understanding of shooting for sport in the countryside and she should not make statements like: (a 10 year old should not be aloud to use a gun and Someone needs to take the licence back now)

this really pisses me off :censored:

Why should normal people be affected by the likes of her scumy son and theirs gangs!
