stealthy1 3,964
I have some permission on one side of a river bank, its one of the few times I take my lurcher airgunning, it means I can whack the rabbits on the other side of the bank, and send her to fetch them, when out with the shotties I take her because she can put up birds or flush rabbits, and retrieve Quote Link to post

mushroom 13,362
Mines a staff and like peeps have already said if your dog is steady then it is a blessing taking them out with ya. Plus if shot quarry manage to get into thick bushes/someone elses land then the dog will fetch it back  Quote Link to post
matt_hooks 188
A steady Staffy? Does such a mythical beast exist? ;-) Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge staff fan, and have a lab x staff which has perhaps the strongest retrieve instinct I've ever seen in a dog, but steady they rarely are! They just have too much enthusiasm! A good steady dog that works well to signals is a great blessing in the field, whereas a dog that is tough to control and tends to hunt ahead too far can be a real pain! Mine has taken to hunting ahead and flushing deer at the moment, which is good fun on a walk, and he never chases them once flushed, but bugger all use when hunting! Quote Link to post
mushroom 13,362
Well the BASC gundog judges and the first place trophies seem to think she was steady plus I can have her in the field and if a rabbit bolts, if I have a gun with me she will not chase it, take her out with the lurchers and it's a whole different job to her she'll try and catch anything  Quote Link to post
