whin 463
saw several pionter crosses not to far from me good for up on the hill were you need a raking dog but i dont no how they would perform on winter wheat etc were the lands a bit faster etc but good dogs for what ive seen and tough with it ,lets face it a pionter is faster than most collies terreirs etc but they are hard to handle if not trained properlyi wouldnt say there a beginners dog ,but thye are hard hunting dogs etc the ones i saw were not bred of the top class greyhounds that are availbe with the right contacts so maybe with a grade A dog you maybe even get abetter dog al the best, Quote Link to post

marco 24
Dickyboy on here has a young pointer cross, nice dogfit, obediant, game, but lacks a bit of speed. i had the pleasure of meeting dickyboy and his mam when he come to collect his pointer greyhound 'buzz'off me,personaly i found the x abit head strong but some one who new what they were doing would sort them out like dickyboy has,he often keeps intouch and the dog is looking really well and is coming on leaps and bounds and has had a fair bit of game with him,a man from retford got its brother in the pics and trained it up and is now at singapore sniffing for drugs, heres a pics of the two when they were 9 months old. Paid 935
Yes, he has done a good job with Buzz, havent seen them for a bit, will have to plan a night lamping with em soon. Quote Link to post
phil wright 2
the first cross gwp can be a bit slow sometimes but i dont think they are any different than other first crosses, the first cross suits me but a 3/4 bred would suit others.the same would apply if we were talking about collie crosses. im no dog trainer but my two are reasonably biddable.they were a bit headstrong as pups especially the bitch but both have settled down ok. HERES A FEW STILLS FROM MY BITCHES FIRST FERRETING TRIP WHICH IVE COPIED ONTO DVD. Quote Link to post
dickyboy 1
 OOOOO a thread i might be able to help someone on.............I like them they are nice companion dogs but they can be headstrong, if brought up like you would a field trial gundog then i think exceptionally high standards of obedience could be acheived but i think it would take alot of time, although you have to stay on top of them if you just want normal obedience as they are constantly trying to push you although he has been steady since day one and so for mooching and earthwork/ferreting this cross would be great but i am yet to test him he returns to the whistle pretty well but not when he's on something my training got relaxed but i'm sure i'll get it back........if i whistle i know he'll come back even with the lamp on much to the annoyance of paid!!! He has a great nose although i'm not sure he knows how to use it! If paid had seen him last night i don't think he would have thought he lacked speed, he caught a wounded  roe with ease, i think the problem with his speed is if your after rabbits don't bother as for little things that turn fast he lacks the turn and the ability to stretch down and strike, although before i ran him with other dogs he was great, picking up 5 out of 6 when 13months but it seems he doesn't care unless another dog might catch it!! He is just under 16months now and i think he is just starting to mature as he lets out his first little growl at things yesterday like a fox while looking out the window.....he has been bitten several times since he was about 12 months old and it doesn't put him off(I shoot alot of foxes while walking and if one runs i use him to hold until i can humanely dispatch it). he will not be seeing a fox now until he is about 2 years as i have come to realise that everyone was right and he is taking a long time to mature. We go out 4-5 nights a week and he can handle it with ease Unfortunately i only have small fields round here and i think he would excel on bigger ground so i think a first cross back to a grey/whippet or saluki/whippet would make an awesome dog. sorry for the long old post but i could talk all day about him....anything else ask me or pm me!! was gonna put up a pic but comp won't let me!! another time maybe paid will but i don't think he has him as fit as he is now Quote Link to post
Paid 935
heres a couple of pics of him Glad to here you have taught him to come back Quote Link to post
phil wright 2
that dog looks a lot racier than my two.hows it bred. Quote Link to post
Guest Dillon
Worked one or should i say alongside one for the past seven/eight years, fellman has also accompanied me a couple of times with him. He is actually Grey/Sal x WHP , hunts marks retrieves jumps sits to the whistle at 200yds no sweat, he will retrieve foxes without a blink and loves water too, only drawback a gear short, and he has thrown to the pointer, other than that a pleasure to work. Regards Dillon Quote Link to post
marco 24
that dog looks a lot racier than my two.hows it bred. he's first x G.S.H.P/greyhound Quote Link to post
dickyboy 1
yep and i believe marco would agree that the mother was the pointer so if bred the other way he might be racier.........but he does get a s**tload of work!! and he's got more muscles/definition now than when those pics were taken he still has his moments paid.....when there is another dog about he gets jealous and starts to try and catch everything with or without me and the lamp....even if the other dogs are on slip............but then i don't really go out with any other dogs often!! when i get some running permission and where i'm allowed to go out with more than myself, we'll get stuck into it paid and MArco if you ever come down this way!! Dillon it does make me chuckle when he retrieves foxes from crops that i shot like other dogs retrieve rabbits....he came bouncing back once or twice happy as larry......always a shock when they nip him!! :11: :11: Quote Link to post
