younggun 0
WELL LADS. JUST WONDERING WHAT YOUR THOUGHTS ARE ON THE MARLIN .22 MAGNUM RIFLE. WHICH WOULD BE BEST. THAT OR A STANDARED .22. ATB BIB. I would say just a normal .22 - the bullets are cheaper and the .22 will kill a fox at about or 100 yards. some say the .22 magnum is too powerful for rabbits and although the magnum has a slightly longer fox range than the .22, it's just not worth the extra money for the magnum's bullets. gav22 24
.22 magnum all the way lad bullets are not that dear Quote Link to post
RicW 67
If it has to be one or t'other .22lr full stop end of. Where it gets interesting is when you want to move up. Then the choice between .17HMR and .22Mag can get difficult. .17HMR for feather, .22Mag for fur? Whatever, with all respect to Gav22, the .22lr is just so versatile. Remember as well that .22lr with subs and a mod is as quiet as a sub-12 air rifle. .22Mag is supersonic and you'll always get that sonic boom. It may not bother your quarry but it can p**s your neighbours off big time! Ric Quote Link to post
an fear fiach 0
I have owned a .22lr for the last 4 years and its a great rifle for day to day shooting and handy for farmers as it kills all there pests, but always laked that extra bit of knock out power, Got a loan of a .22 mag for a week and it was unreal!! Was picking rabbits off at 140+ yards got a fox at about 80yards and it fell flat didnt stir. When wathching the neighbour shooting rabbits with the .22lr sometimes the rabbits dont drop straight away but jump around for a few seconds but with the .22mag When impact the fur the rabbits drop like logs. Dont stir afterwards. Personally I think the .22wmr is a great gun and gives extra distance and knock down power than the standard .22lr. The .22lr bullets range from €4.50 - €8.00 a box of 50, and the .22mag is about €12 a box of 50. If you where comparing that to the .17hmr its abot €18.00 - €22.00 a box of 50. Dont rush your decision anway ask plenty of opinions, All the best, Stephen Quote Link to post
TOP PREDATOR 0
I like both, but when it comes to going to the field, i can more appreciate the extra power and distance that the .22 mag gives me. i know that if i'm out for squirrel, and a shot on a coyote, fox, groundhog, etc. presents itself, i have the extra punch and range to make a shot. there are plenty more special ammos available for the .22 mag now then there was, and i really like the 30gr hornady vmax in my marlin for everything except turkey. on turkey i like 40gr fmj for penetration and less tissue damage. of course the magnums are more expensive to "plink" with than the .22lr, but in the field for hunting i prefer the .22 magnum. my marlin (with a rifle basix trigger) groups around an inch at 100 yards and less than 3 inches at 200. Deker 3,478
WELL LADS. JUST WONDERING WHAT YOUR THOUGHTS ARE ON THE MARLIN .22 MAGNUM RIFLE. WHICH WOULD BE BEST. THAT OR A STANDARED .22. ATB BIB. I struggle with this sort of post.....both calibres are excellent but tend to have different uses. A .22lr with subs is approx 100ft lb, a .22WMR with 40g is approx 320ft lb! Noise and costs are also issues...how on earth is anyone meant to answer the question? What do you want to do with it?? I have BOTH..and a HMR, and I have uses for all of them, situations and circumstances. Quote Link to post
jamie g 17
22lr for me. perfect rabbting rifle. silent, more then enough power for the distance your be shooting the rabbits at holdover to 100 yards in the right conditions isnt that hard Quote Link to post
john robbo 30
this post would have been alot easier to comment on if you put WHAT you were intending to shoot and WHERE. All rimfires are great but they vary enough that only 1 will be right in any 1 circumstance. If you clarified your question our answers would be more relevent to your situation. Regards John. Regards John. sorry if i didnt put the question across properly what i meant by the question was what anyone would consider the best caliber for small vermin [rabbit, crow, etc.] i have a .22 mag all ready and was considering changeing for a standerd .22 just thought i'd ask the question to get peoples comments and feedbacks on them atb bib Quote Link to post
matt_hooks 188
For rabbit, crow etc. on the ground at sensible ranges, the LR is far superiour. Especially a moderated .22lr fed subsonic ammunition. The mag gives a better range, and more energy downrange, but at the cost of much more noise and fuss. If you are likely to want to engage larger targets (fox etc) at more than a few yards, then the mag is good, otherwise it has no benefit over the LR, and many downsides such as noise and cost! john robbo 30
Well for what a second hand bolt action .22lr costs I'd keep the mag and buy a lr also. You will have enough gun to cover any small game situation then. Quote Link to post
RicW 67
If you have both on your ticket and you have got the WMR already then save up some pennies for a half tidy 2nd hand CZ .22lr. Best of both worlds! Ric Quote Link to post

Couldn't agree more - I have both of these .22 rimfires & wouldn't be without either - the semi auto 22 WMR comes into it's own at this time of year for young foxes, but so does the subsonic 22 L/R for bunnies.
