Guest alifeofhunting
MY DOG CAUGHT HIS TOE WHILST OUT ONE NIGHT, HE CLIPPED A BIN ON A GOLF COURSE WE WERE LAMPING. HIS TOE SWELLED UP AND WAS A BIT TENDER AND HE LIMPED ABIT. I GAVE HIM A WEEK OFF WITH NO RUNNING AT ALL TO TRY TO REST IT. ALL SWELLING SEEMED TO HAVE GONE DOWN BUT I TOOK HIM OUT SATURDAY NIGHT, AT FIRST HE WAS OK. HE HAD ABOUT 10 GOOD RUNS AND WAS PERFECT AND KEEN AFTER NOT BEING OUT FOR A WEEK. THEN HE RAN A RABBIT WHICH STOPPED DEAD AND CHANGED DIECTION AND I THINK I CAUGHT HIS TOE AGAIN, HE CAME BACK LIMPING AND LITTLE TOE SWOLLEN UP AGAIN. IVE HAD A LOOK AND SEEMS TO BE BENDING AND MOVING OK JUST A BIT TENDER. THE TIP OF THE TOE WHERE THE PAD AND NAIL ARE HAS JUST SWOLLEN UP. ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO TREAT THIS, IS ICE FOR THE SWELLING A GOOD IDEA . WHAT ELSE WILL SORT THIS???????? I GUESS ITS NOT BROKEN OTHERWISE IT WOULD HURT BADLY TO MOVE AND HE WOULDNT OF RUN ON IT AFTER A WEEK. WHAT WOULD YOU LADS DO???????????????????????????????

skycat 6,173
The dog has mostly dislocated a toe joint, which although probably now back in the right place is still very sore and inflamed. Ligament damage will have occurred, which can take months to heal properly, and I mean months......of no running at all! Take the dog to a good greyhound vet or chiropractor and they will advise you what to do. You say that it isn't broken, but without an x-ray there is no telling that there is not a chip of bone detached. A break doesn't necessarily mean that the bone is in splinters: it could just be cracked or chipped. Only and x-ray will tell you. If you don't follow the correct procedure for the injury the dog may go lame again even if you do rest it up.
chartpolski 24,528
As with any injury that you aren't 100% confident in treating yourself.......... Take the dog to a Vet !! Cheers.

Guest alifeofhunting
SORRY DUCKWING BUT THING YOUVE GOT IT ABIT WRONG. THE PLACE WHERE ACCIDENT HAPPENED IS PART OF MY EMPLOYED PERMISSION. I HAVE TO TAKE ALL RABBITS ALL YEAR ROUND AS PART OF IT OTHERWISE HELL FIND SOMEONE WHO WILL. NICE GROUND ON THIS COURSE DUE TO BEING QUITE A POSH COURSE WITH ALOT OF SPRINKLERS AND WELL LOOKED AFTER. IF I WAS TO NOT RUN THE DPOGS DURING THE SUMMER THE FEW COURSES I GET PAID TO DO WOULD JUST FIND SOMEONE ELSE. NOT ALL PEOPLE THAT HUNT DURING SUMMERS ARE KNOBS SOME OF US HAVE TO. You get payed to run a dog on a posh golf course???? Bet the green keeper isn't to happy about that I know when we were kids and one of the only places we had to run the dogs was a local golf course ( not permission) and a dog spinning it's quarry on a putting green could make one hell of a mess.
scent 509
i think all the advise you need has been given already by skycat ,but jesus it hard enough on your own feet walking in fields not to mention running dogs .I think you have to put the dogs best interests first pal.Is it worth keeping the permission if you dont have a dog to work it cause all his toes are in bits
DUCKWING 302
LETS BE RIGHT ABOUT THIS KID ........... SOME PLACES ARE UNRUNNABLE EITHER AT CERTAIN TIMES OF THE YEAR OR ALL YEAR ROUND BECAUSE OF HAZARDS TO THE DOG ........ NOW I HAVE AND I ALWAYS WILL TAKE GAME FROM THESE AREAS ........... JUST NOT USING A DOG .......... THERES SNARE , NETS , RIFLES .....ETC ..... ETC ..... BROADENING YOUR SCOPE OF RABBIT CATCHING TALENTS WILL BE BENEFICIAL TO YOU AND KEEP YOUR DOG FROM GOING LAME ........ IF YOU THINK THAT THE GOLF COURSE IS SOFT GOING AFTER GETTING CUT BY HEAVEY DUTY MACHINARY 2 OR 3 TIMES A WEEK ALL YEAR ROUND , THEN ROLLED ON THE GREENS AND WALKED ON BY COUNTLESS FEET ....... YOU ARE DAFTER THAN I ALREADY THINK ........... THAT GROUND IS AS COMPACT AS IT CAN BE . DONT BELIVE ME ? ............. TAKE YER SHOES AND SOCKS OFF AND YOU RUN 10 RABBITS NEXT TIME ..... SEE YOU IN A & E DUCKWING

nicksringo 5
very true words duckwing ,,,,golf course ground s might get watered but its so so hard for a dog to run on ,let alone twist a turn ,,,rabbit got the advantage all day long on there ,,if the dogs foot is still the same by now should seek some vets advise to put your mind at rest
