pest Control in the Dales

Recommended Posts

Excellent action shots mate

great pics

its seems its always seems to be new permission for the reason for the "pest control"

would ya not think instead of ferreting young rabbits and killing them in their nests that snaring would be a better alternative than bolting to whippets on such hard ground?

therefore saving the very young rabbits and saving possible injury for yer dogs?

Quite aware what winter fodder is but the fields in your picture have never been cut for fodder have they look at the rushes your dogs are going through bit high arent they and the land is too steep

Rabbits are a pest and should be treated as such....If that means all year round control then so be it...Its the lads land..dogs..ferrets so let him decide if he should summer hunt or not...Just becau

We have to go all year round to keep the permission , simple as that. We get youngsters this time of the year , but if left the does will be having their own litter of young within a few months. It`s easier and more enjoyable in autumn and winter , but the rabbit is a real pest on these dales farms and has to be controlled .Like Tom says we get very few problems with injuries , this ground is ideal for a good working whippet

Tell the farmer that when there cutting crop for winter cattle feed and he is getting 80% less grass of his field than last year this farmer is well and truly peed off with the amount of rabbits hence why we are there this time of year, this is new permission and a quick impact needs making to keep permission. plus its not just crop its the digging causing injuries to cattle and damage to ground.

Tom

So go on pray tell what crops these farmers are cutting for crops for winter cattle feed :hmm: of them dales?

your dogs dont injure their feet but the cattle get injured

WELL LEEVIEW ,

WE ALL KNOW IN SOME PLACES A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF SUMMER POPULATION CONTROL HAS TO BE DONE , ESPECIALLY WHEN ITS NEW PERMISSION ...........

HOWEVER ......................

I MUST ADMIT MY THOUGHTS WERE ALONG THE SAME LINES ............. I CAN SEE A ANOTHER THREAD COMING UP ....

GUTTED .... JUST HAD MY YOUNG DOG OUT AND ITS BROKE A LEG ..... .....

WELL I NEVER WONDER HOW THAT HAPPENED ??????.... A KEEN YOUNG FAST DOG .... LEGS LIKE PIPE CLEANERS ........ WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT IT ????

WHAT I REALLY CANNOT BELIVE IS THAT THEY HAVE HAD THE FECKIN FERRETS OUT IN FECKIN JULY !!!

JEEZ .....

Quite agree nothing wrong with summer pest control  get the rifle out and pick them off, keeps the ferrets fed and let the dogs and ferrets be till the season starts in earnest

At the end of the day if the lads are doing it to keep their permission fair play as who wouldent want to keep a permission in a rabbiting paradise like the dales as lets face it their not the hardest of rabbits to catch with nice spongey ground in some areas for the dogs to run on and some warrens that can be dug with a desert spoon [bANNED TEXT] the ferret kills in.The first time i went up their in the 80s ferreting it was like landing on another planet [bANNED TEXT] all i had been used to ferreting was woodland and thick gorse and bramble coverd bankings.
