Tiff 36
we have a pond at our place, very deep and not too cold. When we bought this place the pond was not a big deal to us, being rural and a lack of neighbors is what we liked. But now that we have the pond and enjoy it as much as we do, I can honestly say a good water source would be at the top of the priority list if we buy something else in the future. Yesterday everyone joined in the fun! feather is still learning how to NOT drown! Quote Link to post

GooseyLucy 2
I'd never swam mine before but after one suffered an injury I spoke to a physio and a vet who both recommended swimming. I picked up a 15ft pool for cheap off eBay and although they're not all keen they all have a good swim, the bitch with the injury came on really well. Quote Link to post
crackpot 29
mine love going to the river, esp summer time. theirs a stretch that narrows so the water flows faster and the russell dog wil very happily swim against the flow for half hour at a time and not move from the same spot. great exercise.CP Quote Link to post
bert the fert 28
What an interesting thread. I've kept my dogs away from water for years, ever since my irish wolfhound fell in the canal and nearly drowned. The struggle to get her out didn't do me any favours either ! Pissed wet through and a torn diaphragm that took months to heal. Subsequent lurchers have been suspicious of water so i've never forced the issue......Now i think i've let them miss out on good fun and exercise. Quote Link to post

lurchergrrl 1,441
Mine swim When they're pups I make a point of tossing them into deep water so they learn to swim and cool themselves off. My lurcher is ace at retrieving from the water - probably better than she is on land On hot days she'll fetch endlessly from the pond we go to. But, word of warning, be aware for that blue green algae if you let your dogs swim, 'cause that stuff is toxic and can kill your dogs pretty quick. Quote Link to post
Tiff 36
no alligators for probably 1,000 miles thankfully! Quote Link to post
