Swimming dogs in off season

I swim my dogs along a long pier in sea water during the summer and I find it is a great way of keeping dogs fit and in good condition. It keeps up muscle tone and it is a great methodd of rehabilitation for dogs that have picked up knocks and cant put their full weight on their limbs. I reciently had a bull that did its cruciate ligament and lost all the muscle on its back leg and wouldnt put weight on it. Through swimming the dog every day it is almost back 100%.I find the salt water is great for healing cuts and gives the coat a great shine but general fitness and injury rehabilitation is the main reason I swim them.

 

Interested to see how many of the doggy men on here swim their workers ?

Mine swim every day, my bitch will do it all year round, breaks through ice to get into water. Its an excellent all round exercise, and has imo many benefits to a dogs health.

Yep, for humans swimming works every muscle in the body i'm sure its the same for dogs, i'll be startin my pup as soon as she gets her second round of shots...

Introduce her to the water gradually, And it makes life a lot easier in the long run

mine swim all year round its a bloody nuisance they are up to the eyes every morning, i get soaked with dogs shaking and running past me. the car smells i have to wash their bedding more frequently etc etc. yes i am a grumpy old man.

will do, here's a pic of my last dog, he got killed on the road a month ago, but f**k me he could swim all day, he was the michael phelps of labs, R.I.P. pup.

friend of mine has a small fishing boat, he keeps a few lurchers and coursing greyhounds, we take da dogs out drop em in the water and drive on, dogs look very well, and they love it

I think swimming is a good way of keeping a dog ticking over or convalecing through injurys etc but when working a dog hard i think swimming takes to much out of them leaving a dog stale.

we have a pond at our place, very deep and not too cold. When we bought this place the pond was not a big deal to us, being rural and a lack of neighbors is what we liked. But now that we have the pond and enjoy it as much as we do, I can honestly say a good water source would be at the top of the priority list if we buy something else in the future.

 

Yesterday everyone joined in the fun!
