410 Mossberg Hushpower vs. .22 Air rifle

Recommended Posts

The .410 sound like a good buy, I shoud be able to sell the rabbits with shot so not a problem there. Will the .410 shoot further that the .22? cheers. Ben

with a good .22 air rifle you should if you are a good shot be able to shoot out to 50 yards, with a .410 you can just about half that, i have a s/s baikel .410 i use when ferreting i have had the odd "long shot" which i would say were about 30-40 yards but i think you could say just a lucky pellet.

i used to have a rapid 7 .22 and my longest shot with that was around 60 odd paces head shot clean kill on a rabbit, a shot you would`nt consider with a .410, but with a .410 you can shoot running or flying things, something you cant do with an airgun.

i would say every time a good air rifle has more range than a .410 so you just need to ask yourself what sort of shooting you will be doing

in your first post, you state for shooting pigeon and lamping rabbits, its got to be a shotgun then, cant see you doing big numbers of pigeon with an air rifle as you'll need to let them land before shooting, a mossburg pump with enable you to shoot both in the air and as they land x 3 shots

you can also lamp with a hushpower

either buy a new mossburg hushpower 410 with both barrels (one normal, one hushpower) around £650 or theres one for sale second hand, either on our for sale board or pigeon watch, with both barrels for £500

just bought a fully moderated 12gauge baikal single shot from hushpower (the one on their website at £385) I cant believe how quiet it is.....noise is a consideration for some of my shooting places and i dont like ear protectors.......it allows for moving targets and being a 12gauge has a wider range of ammo that can be fed through it (you still get 60% noise reduction with normal carts) with hushpower carts from eley its nearly silent

I would recommend the moderated 12gauge rather than a 410......

I had exactly the same decision to make a few years back. Do I go for the mossberg .410 hushpower or a decent .22 air rifle.

I opted for the mossberg. I figured, not only could I use it for the rabbits, I could also use it for pigeons etc.. To be honest, after taking it lamping a few times, I found it wasnt really practical unless you were shooting from a vehicle - i was lamping on foot, and very often hiding up and waiting for rabbits to appear. Also, the range wasnt as good as I liked. So, I ended up going out and buying a decent .22 PCP air rifle.

Now, I find i use the air rifle for lamping more than the .410. With the .22 I find im more accurate and have a longer range. Obviously its no good for pigeons unless they are just sitting there. But then for pigeons a cheapie sub 100quid 12bore shotgun would probably do the job just as well (although obviously not quietly) as the 600quid mossberg pumpaction.

Noisewise, i found in the field my mossberg was comparible to a springer air rifle. But, my .22 PCP was totally silent.

In my experience the .410 has too short a range and the 12 gauge is too noisy. Get a 20 bore Mosberg Hushpower, you can bowl bunnies over at 40 yards, no problem. I used mine Saturday night and was whacking any that got up and bolted under the lamp. It is long though and with the moderator on isn't the best for pigeons, but with practice you can regularly hit flying targets. I use mine when lamping and pick up plenty that can't be got with an airgun or rimfire.
