I give a little drop of cod liver oil with their tea, but the only time i have ever given my dogs vit c ( think it was actually in the form of acsorbic acid) was when the vet prescribed it to reduce bladder stones/crystalls in my whippet.

What are the benefits of vit c for the dog?

Vitamin C works with vitamin E and helps regenerate vitamin E, potentiating its antioxidant effect. Vitamin C supplementation does no harm, since the excess is excreted through the kidney. While dogs produce vitamin C in their bodies (unlike human beings and guinea pigs who must have it in their diet), under stress or disease, they may need vitamin C in excess of their manufacturing capacity. In excessive dose, vitamin C can cause flatulence and diarrhea. This intestinal tolerance level varies among dogs, but is generally around 3000 mg per day in an adult German Shepherd. I recommend this be given to all dogs. For dogs under 2 years of age, give 250 mg vitamin C twice a day. For dogs over 2 years of age, give 500 mg of vitamin C twice a day.

Dogs produce their own vit C so why give more? high doses of antioxadents may slow healing, recovery.

"Too much of a good thing

Men who took vitamin C and E supplements showed no changes in their free radical levels, whereas those who did not take these antioxidants showed increased levels of free radical oxidative stress.

After four weeks of intensive exercise training, insulin sensitivity was restored only in the group of men who did not take antioxidant supplements.

The men who took the vitamin supplements fared worse, metabolically.

Dr Sarah Aldred, a lecturer in exercise biochemistry at the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Birmingham, said: "It doesn't mean that antioxidants like vitamin C and vitamin E are bad for us, it just means that sometimes we need to consider whether taking supplements is actually beneficial.

"As this study shows it is not actually always the case."

so,how much vitamin c do you giv a patterdale? and wear do you get it from,is it the normal vit c from the chemist?

none! it make it's own, it would just be more rubbish the body needs to dispose of and may have a negative effect on any healing that is going on.
