You must enjoy digging? P1 no cause we net up about three or four sets and give them ime to settle before we enter the ferrets and if we do dig, our ground is easy digging max 4ft in a sandy soil ..Easy digging. mighty celt 996
dont bring terriers ferreting no more they stop rabbits from bolting as much. from running up and down the ditch the minute they here a bolt sticking there heads up burrows missing the rabbits and then u have 2 dig them out cause they wont bolt.keep my terriers for bushing and the odd dig now.just bring the lurchers ferreting and get alot more bolts as theres no noise around the ditch and they fly out. Aaron_butcher 17
my mates terriers are good marking dogs but their mouths are as soft as a whack off ricky hatton. not sure if its terriers in general or just his but as soon as a bunny jumps in the net the terriers are on it and chomping it right up. Brimmer 220
Must admit, i like my solitary days out with my russel. Obviously the bag numbers are going to be down as you have to net every hole up, lets face it they are useless at catching anything but the dopiest of rabbits compared to a runner! A good terrier is handy to have around, the marking is superb and no stone is left unturned. Thing is most are, (like my own), swelled headed, a bully and a scrapper around other dogs, determined beyond the point of reason, and far too slow to catch a surface skipper. A dog bred, tried and tested for countless generations being the lurcher suits the bill better. A decent lurcher has a nose to match that of a terrier, brains that could put terriers to shame, and the ability to catch above ground. Thing is, terriers dont get injured, if you had to rely on them they could do a job on 3 legs, every day of the week. For all the trouble they cause, they are still worth the hassle, worked alone they are often great sidekicks that can prevent hours of pointless netting up, and an experienced ferreter can still get good bags of rabbits with even the most pointy snouted, stumpy legged pet of a russel anybody could lay eye's on! Depends on what you want really, if i had to have one dog, i know a terrier would see me out every weekend without fail, but i'd be kicking myself sometimes. If i had the choice of owning a few dogs, a half decent lurcher will see and match the terrier every time. (But the terrier would always be there!) Quote Link to post
