The Duncan 802
i dont think anyone did state that there ideal rabbiting dog is a dhx as they tend to be big, but they can do the magic if need be..and can certainly catch rabbits, alot more than people give them credit for...fact! Quite right Rob, are the dh x's the best all out rabbiting dogs? Probably not, but a lot seem to get more than satisfactory results from them. The thing is, there are 'horses for courses', but then there's having a choice and preference for the mix of your hunting dog. My own dog is definitely overkill for purely rabbiting and I reckon she'd take any prey that came her way if the law allowed, but she is beautiful to me and I am smitten It is good to have a choice, or we'd all have beddy or collie whippet crosses (not there's anything wrong with them at all!) as rabbits is all we're legally allowed to hunt with our dogs these days. Dan Edwards 1,134
size doe's not matter on rabbits if the dog wants the rabbit bad enuff it will find a way to get down to it Lets start over so you dont get your panties in a bunch fella. This statement right here is bullshit. If I had a whippet and said that I was taken 200 pound bucks with it and made some bullshit statement that size does not matter as long as the dog has try. You or somebody else on here would surely call me out cuz it would be bullshit just as your statement was. 2 Quote Link to post
chartpolski 23,677
According to some on here; pure collies, beddies, staffies, etc., have no problem with rabbits, so I'm sure a 29" deer/grey could catch one or two !! LOL !! Cheers. 1 Quote Link to post

I've seen cur dogs catch rabbits too and I got a buddy that had one that caught a jack rabbit now and again but that dont make me wanna go tell folks that breed dont matter, its how much heart the dog has. Keeps 403
Sorry Dan, but I'd agree with gafer on this one. Just because a dog is big doesn't mean it isn't good at picking up rabbits or an equal match to a smaller dog. It depends on the dog itself. I have an old first cross deerhound/greyhound here, she is at least 29" tts and she would often beat the smaller lurchers to rabbits when they were out together. She did this regularly even into her old age, when she was in good health, on all kinds of land. Shes old and quite poorly now, I would give my right arm to have her back as a young dog and start all over again with her. 5 Quote Link to post
Dan Edwards 1,134
You dont have to be sorry, Keeps. I am just of the opinion that size does matter on all quarry. There are exceptions of course but exceptions dont make the rule. Like I said, no need to be sorry though. Quote Link to post

I agree I have nothing to be sorry about I shall rephrase "Dan I agree with gafer on this one. " Exceptions, I would think there are more than just exceptions, with deerhound blooded dogs, they have to be built with the right conformation: ie long neck, but the ones I have seen have taken rabbits with ease, in their stride. This is my smaller deer x's sire, a large 29" first cross bred by Bill Docherty. The owner of this dog purposely took the largest in the litter, a big strong dog to carry on his line. I'm not saying that they are suited to everything, and every type of land, but what I am saying is that they can hold their own, and more than "an exception" can pick up rabbits with ease.
