junior 267
the way i see it the dog dosen't know its not the ideal size for rabbits its just adapts and gets on with it and does what it does best and catches The sumbitches may not know they not the size to fit in a fox den neither but that dont make em able like a dog gone terrier. stick to treeing coons and chewing tobacco you hillbilly and leave the deerhounds crosses to the lads that are in the know......ive seen full deerhounds better on rabbits than most whippets...fact Same question I posed to rockardo up above son. i here your staghounds think there hounds and like to hunt in packs.....lurcher gone hound dog you mug Quote Link to post
trottingfever 0
I used to own a deerhound whippet x years ago,she was a very good hare bitch, but would,nt look at a for till well into her fifth year, and by then she had mastered the knack of picking them up without getting that badly bitten, most of the first crosses of deerhound are very good coursers and once they start they are demons for fox,i will root up a picture of the bitch i used to have.. Kye 77
I had a dog called Blister. He was 29" and 78lbs in his prime...he mopped up rabbits like they were nothing...it got boring lamping him on them...his first season in the south west, he killed 73 hares single handed, daytime...he was mustard...id have loved him back home in england...he just made rabbits look like they werent moving!...he would catch them at night, without a lamp....best night lamping with him was 17 hares, 2 gray fox, and a dozen or so rabbits...i think he missed two hares and that was it...miss the ole boy now. 1 Quote Link to post
Keeps 403
You dont have to be sorry, Keeps. I am just of the opinion that size does matter on all quarry. There are exceptions of course but exceptions dont make the rule. Like I said, no need to be sorry though. I agree I have nothing to be sorry about I shall rephrase "Dan I agree with gafer on this one. Just because a dog is big doesn't mean it isn't good at picking up rabbits or an equal match to a smaller dog. It depends on the dog itself. I have an old first cross deerhound/greyhound here, she is at least 29" tts and she would often beat the smaller lurchers to rabbits when they were out together. She did this regularly even into her old age, when she was in good health, on all kinds of land. Shes old and quite poorly now, I would give my right arm to have her back as a young dog and start all over again with her. " Exceptions, I would think there are more than just exceptions, with deerhound blooded dogs, they have to be built with the right conformation: ie long neck, but the ones I have seen have taken rabbits with ease, in their stride. This is my smaller deer x's sire, a large 29" first cross bred by Bill Docherty. The owner of this dog purposely took the largest in the litter, a big strong dog to carry on his line. I'm not saying that they are suited to everything, and every type of land, but what I am saying is that they can hold their own, and more than "an exception" can pick up rabbits with ease. Ceeps....you spelt name wrong, bad girl... Whoops sorry Ramany, my spellings bloody terrible too much time spent on this forum..... Quote Link to post

ALL IVE SEEN WERE NATURAL JUMPERS , A GREAT BOON FOR DAYTIME , GOOD FEET , DECENT NOSES AND A WILLINGNESS TO PLEASE ,........ COULD NOT ASK FOR MORE WERE THEY SUITABLE FOR CATCHING ON ROUGH FELL SIDES STREWN WITH ROCK ? OR IN WOODLAND BRASH , HOW ABOUT A RAILWAY EMBANKMENT ? , WELL NO NOT REALLY A SMALLER , NIMBLER DOG WOULD HAVE A DECIDED ADVANTAGE ,..... COULD THEY KILL HARES LIKE MY COURSING BRED STUFF ........ CERTAINLY NOT .......... BUT ON THE WHOLE AS A GENERAL POTFILLER IVE SEEN A LOT WORSE .................. A LOT OF DOGS NOWADAYS NEVER REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL AS THEY NEVER SEE ENOUGH GAME , ITS SURPRISING HOW ANY DOG COMES ON WITH CONSTANT WORK DUCKWING 1 Quote Link to post

Dan Edwards 1,134
ITS SURPRISING HOW ANY DOG COMES ON WITH CONSTANT WORK Once again, I have noticed the opposite. Its surprising how many dogs up and quit when you hunt them enough. 1 Quote Link to post
