albert64 1,882
at my kids school they still have the tadpole tank, and every year they get an incubator and hatch out a load of chicks, my daughter who's just 6 tells everyone who'll listen how the dog and ferrets work together to catch rabbits, the headmaster has asked if she can take in the young ferrets to show the other children,
ratattack 111
Theres plenty adults who know naff all about wildlife! I come across people weekly who don't know the difference between a bumblebee and a wasp for example! Mice are rats etc etc So i'm not surprised kids know nothing about the world away from the tv! clint 45
you tell them to read THL, they learn all here. Is very imformative.
mouse 282
my wife teaches in a private school and since she has been there she has made a nature area where she can take the kids and sit and learn about wildlife.in our kids village school they are all countryside people and when we are near there with hounds they all come out to have a look and the daughter spends the rest of the day telling the rest of the kids the names of the hounds. Neal 1,870
Not all teachers are the same. I've been teaching for thirteen years now, mostly in inner city schools, and I always tell the kids I teach, ranging from 3 to 11 year olds, about my ferreting trips etc. I've also taken one of my ferrets and a kelpie into school to do a pre-visit talk before we took them to a country show. Whenever I teach food chains and food webs I make sure I include the lamb - fox link and when we do the ubiquitous fox hunting topic in year 6 they get the true facts to balance their tv based arguements. Also, my son is only just over 22 months old but he already knows what a pigeon is; he claps his hands whenever he sees one as I've taught him to do that to shoo them out of the garden. I agree totally. Its just [bANNED TEXT] i was growing up in the 60s in the industrial heartland of south yorkshire and most kids were just being educated to end up in mineing or the steel works the schools i attended always taught about nature and back then we had programs like animal magic and survival and every kid knew the difference between a blackbird and a starling.atb dell
iamduvern 62
Its sad as our children in schools are just been programed for eventual consumerism and most are not been taught about nature in any way.I can remember in infant school having a nature table and even those shoes with the tracks of different british mammals on the soles got kids intrested at a young age and a fish tank with tadpoles in to watch them  transform into small frogs not to mention the eye spy books and the observer books.Jeezz am showing my age now atb dell Don't blame the schools blame the parents learning begins at home from an early age The Hertfordshire junior school curriculum still teaches wildlife studies but day trips to nature reserves are few and far between due to health and safety and risk assesment issues How many parents even read to kids these days let alone take them out and let them get muddy looking for beetles and sticklebacks
