Guest traceyg
As most of you know i work in a primary school . Today as i was in class a baby hedgehog just walked right up to the classroom door . I picked it up took it into the class of 6/7 year olds and i was amazed at the comments i heard . More then half of the class had never seen a hedgehog before . One child thought it was a squirrel and only three children could tell me anything about it . How come we are letting our children have no understanding of nature and whats going on about us .We really need a lesson showing them whats going on and getting them involved in understanding the countryside How are we going to get them to see the magic of hunting and seeing whats about us .your views please
stealthy1 3,964
I heard a young lad in a supermarket tell his little sister that meat was made from plastic, the same way they make bubble gum

poacher3161 1,766
Its sad as our children in schools are just been programed for eventual consumerism and most are not been taught about nature in any way.I can remember in infant school having a nature table and even those shoes with the tracks of different british mammals on the soles got kids intrested at a young age and a fish tank with tadpoles in to watch them transform into small frogs not to mention the eye spy books and the observer books.Jeezz am showing my age now atb dell
rob.i 26
It is a shame these kids didnt know what a hedgehog looked like my 4 year old grandaughter knows what one is but has never seen one .One would of thought that by the age of 6 they would have at least seen a picture of one .Probably only seen Sonic the hedgehog
Tallyho 181
My son has a friend that comes round to stay , i showed him a wildlife book and he thought a hare was a kangaroo and didnt have a clue when i showed him a picture of a badger but the sad thing is , he knows all about the drugs and the theiving , he knows the routine of the police raiding his house, he came here once to stay over the night he ended up staying a week , we had him out across the fields on the quads, he loved it , i felt terrible taking him back cause he didnt want to go, it is sad that children dont know our wildlife. Hannah4181 260
My 6 year old niece took an old fox brush in for show and tell! Bless her, she stood up and explained all about hunting. Mind you there is only 40 kids in the school and i'd say 30 of them are from hunting families.
johnny boy68 11,726
My 4 year old daughter and 3 year old son have just taken a ferret each into school as I type this......my daughter will stand there and tell the whole class how they're used and how people needed this type of animal to be able to catch their dinner. She's so forward for 4 knows all about wind-berries and black-berries for making pies. Its what our world is like these days some parents rather stick their kids in front of tv than taking them out and showing them the natural world........its "the playstation age"
craigyboy 1,274
it doesnt help when kids are having kids the parents know fook all either,i spotted a young lad with his kids on an allotment last mth, turning over the soil getting the ground ready for growing and as i watched him i noticed with every fork full he turned he then picked summat up and threw it on the fire,so i walked over and asked him what he was doing his reply "im burning these fecking pests"........worms Edited July 2, 2010 by craigyboy
Lee85 44
it's sad but true, my 18th month old son knows what things are though, I always have him out for walks round the coutryside and point him the animals out, we actually have a 4ft fish tank filled with tadpoles and baby frogs at the minute and he can tell the difference, he even trys to say there names, we did have some baby birds in a nest again but the mapies had there way - again! my son can say 'naughty magpie' while wagging his finger which is good! It's the kids in london what have it worst, places like that - some have never seen a cow, shame. Edited July 2, 2010 by Lee85
Guest traceyg
Bring back the good old days eh lol . Yes it is such a shame i would love to tell the children i work with all about hooting and hunting there are moles on our field and i would love nothing better then to show them how to trap it or catch a rabbit from the field lol , but the head and teacher i work with are both vegetarians so i think if i want to keep my job i will keep my opinions to myself lol

Guest traceyg
Dont think i explained myself right tally . I am very proud to sayi love hunting and would love nothing more then telling the children about it but in school now you cannot teach what you want you have to teach what the government think is important .And sadly hunting ect isn't one of them So if the child doesn't have hunting in there family they may never find out what they are missing . who knows what there family would think if a six year old went home and said i have been taught how to snare a rabbit today lol. But the point i am getting across is children should be taught more about the country side around them as a every day lesson .
FoxyWarrior 17
What subject do you teach? My mother in law is a head teacher in a public school. One of their subjects to teach is conservation and how important it is to our countryside. Mostly all and everything is learnt with pride. Tallyho I agree with you totally. johnny boy68 11,726
Tracey why don't you teach the kids about the old hunter-gatherer ways then maybe you could put your own modern slant on it.The ways of the hunter are getting more and more phased out due the current climate,I understand its your job and your livleyhood at stake but I've got a 3 and 4 year old who love animals and respect them.My kids enjoy learning about everything I do because I make it fun and try to explain it simply, its all about how you put it across to them IMO..........John
