Trigger 26
basically i am just wondering if it would be possible for me to get my whippet X to work feather in the day and perhaps do a bit of lamping the odd night or two, i know that dogs are able to tell the difference between day and night work but would a dog be able to just work the feather in the day and the rabbit at night, or would taking it out lamping make him work rabbits aswell as birds in the day. would the dog be able to do it or should he just be used to do the one job that i need him for which is working feather? charliehunter100 22
why do you want it to leave rabbits Quote Link to post
forest of dean redneck 11,614
dunno maybe hard pushed to get it to ignore rabbits and concentrate on feather. my reasoning is if its edible its a good job done no matter what it is. Quote Link to post
Trigger 26
why do you want it to leave rabbits because when after birds in the day rabbits are not relevent Edited July 1, 2010 by Trigger Quote Link to post
poacher3161 1,766
why do you want it to leave rabbits because when after birds in the day rabbits are not relevent Impossible imho and unfair on any lurcher type dog to stop it from chaseing rabbits and flushing birds instead it is the reason the gundog breeds were developed in the first place. 1 Quote Link to post

poacherman 353
ave got a springer spaniel that chases rabbits when out with my lurcher but when out with the shotgun hes a right steady dog. he knows the differnce. am sure you could do it if you tried hard enough mate atb poacher spaniel is not the same as a wippet you clown when did a say it was the same fanny face, if men can go out lamping with there lurchers at heal and only chase on command im sure they could do it during the day but if the whippet flushes a rabbit it might be a different story. you can stop your dog from chasing when the dog is close in but if its out infront working its different story. best thing to do is get yourself a spaniel, different dogs for different jobs Quote Link to post
wirral countryman 2,110
I can't see why you bought a whippet cross?it does'nt make sense what you're asking from the dog in the daytime,if it lamps of a night on rabbits then its sure to chase and pick up in the day, poach is right its a gun dog you require, you can't take the hunting instinct out of a good dog,my lurcher's are expected to catch everything day or night, with teeth and without, atb, wirralman Quote Link to post
Secret-Fields 7
i was always led to believe, back in the times of kings an queens ect ect a lurcher would be a dog to provide for poor mans family an fill the pot, an would be expected to be a jack of all trades filling in for the gun dogs in the day and mixing a bag? with fur an feather? it can be done, it is done, but not by me lol Quote Link to post
