poacherman 353
i think it would be great to have a dog trained to hand signals, im going to start doing it with my bitch, i would say shes fully trained now and doing everything right. friend of mine had his dog trained to hand signals and it was great to watch and came in handy sometimes when they were qaurry heading there way and the dog was far out and didnt want to start shouting. use to do a little whistle then do his hand signal for down. he could get his dog sitting down when it was about 200yards away just with a movement of his hand. seen some qaurry heading right in to his dogs path by doing that and get his dog to work out to the left then right wit hand signals, easy done with a spaniel at 15 yards while quatering but with a lurcher at a 100 to 200 yards out working the park. but a suppose thats taking training to another level atb poacher

Lab 10,979
does anybody think they could train a working dog by not using there voice and just using hand signals atb poacherman No............even the best gundogs need a command(usually whistle) to stop them so you can direct them from there. I could stop him even behind a rabbit, I trained him to an assortment of quiet hisses for close work while lamping, I used to tell folks I could lie him down by telepathy, what I did was click my tongue very slightly on the roof of my mouth so no one could hear it only the dog, so you decide. Although that's usually the case it's not strictly true, the whistle is used to stop the dog so it looks at you, if the dog is coming towards you or glances back it can be stopped with a hand signal. Obviously hand signals can only work if the dog can see them.
