Anyone know anything about a rasping cough in both my greyhound/deerhound and whippet.

After a chase they seem to have a very dry throat.I know they run with their mouths open and a certain amount of a dry throat is to be expected but has anyone else experienced this in their own dogs.

Their health generally is excellent but the raspy cough lasts for a few days.

DOGS USUALLY COUGH AFTER A HARD RUN IF NOT 100% FIT

THEN GOES AWAY DAYS AFTER.

BUT IF KENNEL COUGH THIS WILL CARRY ON

Does this happen in the same area? Maybe Mr. Farmer is using something on his land that your dogs are sensitive to? If it was only the one dog affected, I would tend to think that it was a problem with the pharynx or soft palate but the both of them indicates an external factor? my russel bitch had kennel cough last month i had her on childs benylin it cleared up and she was back to her self in 2 weeks

if the dog has a cough after a hard run, the type of cough that it is trying to cough something up out of its throat then it could have a defect in its heart as a small amount of fluid builds up in the lungs and is usually pumped away by the heart but when an animal with a dodgy heart valve has a race the fluid builds up and is ejected through the air passage ways by the dog coughing it up.you can hear it with a stethascope on the heart if your not sure. dogs can live all their lives out like this working without it getting worse. if the coughs in two of your dogs then it is an infection of the throat or lungs.

mates dog used to cough, but only in one town, anyway he had a long run one day, and coughed since then for weeks, he ended up dying at the vet overnight... they did say he has a very large heart, we reckon he was born with the problem. Also know of a relative of this dog, who also died from a heart problem

seen a few good lurchers over run and nacking the heart just because thier owners couldnt keep them on leads for a rest.

At the begining of the season my dog's allway's cough for a bit after a long hard run but as the season progresses and the dog's get fitter the coughing stop's.. so i would say it's down to fitness.. ..

Millet

If it is kennel cough, they would be coughing all the time. I would agree with Millet as my hounds will cough

after a hard run at the beginning of the season but as they get legged up and fit the cough will not occur.

most dogs cough abit early on in the season espec after a mouthful of fur and before he gets time for you to clean his throat etc he gets another chase , i always check the dogs mouth after a catch and take loose hair and fur out most coughing is done on big hare chases for me as hares have plenty loose fur so does roe etc round the kneck area , if it persists get him checke dover you dont no what they put in feilds etc spray lost a dog through pioson once not nice,whatw as worse i couldnt replace him ,hope your dogs fine

Worse case scenario - could be a heart murmer, the vet can detect that no prob - in fact , if you listen to the dogs heart it should go boomboom boomboom . But if there is a whooshing sound, could be a problem.

It could be worms, some lads run there dogs on hair at a very young age, this can do a lot off damage to the diafram witch will make the dog cough. Stan.
