Mr Hunter 31
Spaniels or Spaniel crosses seem to be the best and ya dont have to worry about them going to ground.I got a pure Wheaten bitch which which is bushing really well at minute even @ just 6 months old.I walk my dogs at a technology park which is alive with wildlife and if there is a rabbit/bird in the bush she will make sure it gets out.Aint no cover too thick she will somehow find a way into it and to date had two young rabbits(which were released back down hole as unharmed) a coot and a moorhen chick. pointer 543
I enjoy bushing with terriers..but it isnt when they go to ground and your not ready for it. buy a locator collar or keep away from land they may have an earth/drain YOU BOYOS WANT TO RE - READ WHAT BBB HAS WRITTEN ...... AINT THAT THE TRUTH !!! SPRINGERS WOULD BE MY CHOICE ...... BEAGLES ARE AS FECKIN NIGHTMARE ..... THEY CAN HUNT BUT IT AINT EASY STOPPING THEM .... AND THATS A MAJOR FACTOR IN THE GAME DUCKWING Ive been saying for years that bushing with terriers is dodgy and i think eventually anyone who regularly goes bushing will lose a terrier if it isnt collared up.Even then it might get into a bad spot.If someone wants to bush with a terrier something like the B and F system is a must have. I have NEVER worked dogs or even gone for a country walk where i could say there was definately nothing to ground,a fox or badger can come along onenight and open up some rabbit hole and a terrier can find it.I ended up having to dig out my retired terrier last year in a tiny little spot in the only area around me where i thought i could risk letting him off a leash. Its just a scratty bit of wasteland in an industrial area. Almost everytime im out with minkhounds i hear someone say that they should just let the terriers run free with the hounds even though they are walking past earths, setts and drains allday long,it beggars belief. I use a GWP and whilst he dosent work cover like a terrier or spaniel he acts like a hound would. If somethings in there its going to be flushed out.He aint ever going to get to ground and whilst he does occasionally run things to ground and comes across occupied earths all he can do is bay and mark.Good fun without the risk of terriers. Id also recommend putting a collar on a terrier even if your ratting in outdoor places, ive had a few days go bad when a terrier has gone to ground when all we were doing was ratting. At the very least sooner or later your terriers going to feck off into a bale stack and if you dont get a bolt its handy to have a collar on. stormyboy 1,352
I've used plummer's and russell's for a long time now and find they hunt very well, they miss nothing and will work all day, some day's the terrier's kill more than the guns,I agree that knowing the ground you hunt is very important as well as your individual dogs that make up your team, some open up when close and some only need a sniff to set them off(barking),other's can be silent killer's,but one things for sure its very good sport and takes a bit of beating for excitement, atb, wirralman yep i agree i own 3 plummers and am looking after me mates dog which is litter brother to my young dog 9month old ive had them out bushing the last few days and just watching them work a line in and out of cover is very nice to watch the chance of them catching a bunny on this patch is slim until winter as its very dense at the moment the 2 adults are bringing the the pups on leaps and bounds i shot over them during the winter had rabbits hare fox with them they have flushed deer on my mates land with the 2 older dog standing on there back legs senting the air its the only time they really give tongue when the deer are about the land owner loves to watch the terriers he laughs saying he,s getting rid of his 2 cockers and his springer these 3 dog are fantastic and the 2 yong plummers are starting to copy some of the spanial action role on next season Very versatile terriers are plummers.
