Redleg22 2
East of Scotland Association for Wildfowling & Conservation E-Newsletter – Early Summer 2010 Communications The committee realises that it is very important to keep in touch with members throughout the year. Without wanting to increase costs by having more than four printed Newsletters each year, it has been decided to issue periodic e-mailed newsletters whenever there is news to give to members between those times. Scottish Game Fair, Scone The club will have its own stand at the Scottish Game Fair at Scone on 2nd, 3rd and 4th July when we will be giving some demonstrations and highlighting the wide range of activities we provide for members. There will also be a “Guess the Number of Cartridges†competition with prizes of a Roe Stalk and a Duck Flight, so come in and try your luck. Club merchandise will also be on sale throughout the Fair. Results from Gun and Dog Weekend Our Gun and Dog Weekend on 22nd and 23rd May was hugely successful with many members and their friend coming along to participate in the fun and help out with a variety of tasks. On the Saturday an excellent clay shoot was held with a number of testing stands designed to replicate wildfowling targets. Three members tied on 42/50 and, after a shoot-off, the winner was Keith Brown of Falkland. Second place was awarded to Jim Allan and Mark Breeze took the third slot. On the Sunday, a Gundog Fun Day was held with, again, the emphasis being on the skills required by the wildfowler's dog. The working test was ably judged by Ally Kennedy, Adam Mair and last year's winner, Sandy Boag. Top honours went to James Scobie of Edinburgh with Suzie who scored a remarkable 79 points out of a possible . Second place went to Barry Cargill with Teal and Neil Gunn's dog Bruce took third spot. Barbecues were held on both days and the club would like to thank the keeper at Balbirnie and everyone else involved in the organisation of a superb weekend. A video of the weekend can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fF9GLbmgRCc BASC Council Election We are delighted that David de Gernier, ESAWC’s secretary was successful in the recent elections to BASC Council and will continue to ensure that wildfowling is given a high priority within BASC. Thanks to everyone who voted for David. Additionally, Neil Griffiths and Alasdair Troup were also elected from Scotland, so there will continue to be a good representation from north of the Border, and WLC Chairman Lee Freeston was re-elected. Wildfowling on Local Nature Reserves Members are reminded that they need to ensure that they have permits if they intend to go wildfowling at Montrose Basin, the Eden Estuary or John Muir Country Park next season. Forthcoming Events Following the sea angling outing on 13th June, another is planned for 1st August. For further details of this outing and to book places on them, please text Cammy Wyllie on 07723 020686 or send an e-mail to events@scottish-wildfowling.org.uk Sporting Auction One of our main fundraisers is the Sporting Auction which is currently in full swing. You can make bids for any of the sporting opportunities online at our site at: http://www.esawc.co.uk/auction/ The few remaining tickets for our Grand Raffle can also be purchased on that site. The prize is a day’s driven partridge shooting worth up to £1000 and there are only 50 tickets at £25 each. The raffle will be drawn at the Scone Fair on Sunday 4th July. BASC and Lead Shot In recent months there has been much ill-informed comment in some sections of the sporting press about BASC and an imagined plan to phase out the use of lead shot in all shooting. It needs to be made clear that there is no government proposal to further restrict the use of lead shot and it is BASC’s firm policy to fight against any unwarranted restrictions that might be proposed in future.
