Moby 0
use a livebait popped up to about 6 or 8 inches under the surface, and have everything as free running as possible Quote Link to post
runforyourlife 361
If its a carp water that your fishing them carp baits will be your best bait. I just used standard carp rigs myself, try a fixed lead on one rod then a running lead on the other. I like to use 22mm halibut pellets as a hook bait aswell as mixed size pellets for loose feed. Hope this helps ATB martin Lol, i dont think they will be better than a livebait..... I know what your saying but the catfish is a natural scavenger and if they are in carp waters they will more redily pick up boilies and pellets that carp anglers have thrown in than use energy in catching live baits. This is the reason so many carp anglers catch cat fish or get broke off and say it was a huge carp that snagged them up. Everyone has there own methods im just saying that i have found on carp waters you are better off with carp baits and if it is just cats that you want use larger baits. ATB martin ATB Nah, use a livebait pal... obviously they get caught over and over by carpers, its food. And no one is using liveys.... Like moby said, cant "BEAT" a popped up livey but suspend one just below the surface, especially in this weather. The take will be frightening when it smashs through it, and the run incredible... runforyourlife 361
never caught one, would love to though.what do they fight like? do they run? stay deep? similar to carp/pike? Earth, make it your next target, you'll love it! More dogged and heavy than a pike, maybe not as much energy but f**k me, the first runs on a big cat are unstoppable, especially when they bang a big livey! They hit at ridicolous speed, and yes they stay low... NOthing like a carp, it is far more exhilarating...... A few of us were once invited to a private estate lake in the heart of cheshire, to find out what actually lived in the water. It had barely been fished in the last 50yrs!! Long story short, i was reeling in a good rudd, we were taking them to 2lb of the surface, one after the other, so the peg was bubbling. This is exactly what cats love, activity. All of a sudden the water erupted like i have never seen in my life!! It was like a small car beeing dropped in, and when hit the bottom the bubble came up, if you know what i mean, the vortex was unbielevable. The whole of the shallow end moved with the ripples!!! And i absolutly shit myself. With in seconds a was snaged some 50yrds away.. Imagine the change in tactics, lol. liveys, cheese, air injected lobs, etc. Dont know if you have heard of mick brown but he was the first to score with a 20lb+ mint condition cat. We went on to catch them to nearly 40lb in the time we had on the lake. We were taking carp to mid 20's on the lob worms which we really had no interest in, so we left the lobs out, as we all wanted that big cat, lol... I'll hold my hands up, and say, none of us got it but i hope this gives you a feel of what cats are all about mate... Quote Link to post

Pops 19
over here we use salt water rigs and live bream or shad upto 2# for big cats on 2/0-4/0 circle hooks. we sometimes will trim the tail a bit to put more scent in the water & cause more action. float about 2 ft down in summer (deeper if it gets real hot) and about 2 ft from bottom in winter. we chum w/ soured birdseed. throw about a half dozen-dozen golfball sized gobs out in the area you plan to fish the day before. can also use soured feed corn (maize i think y'all call it) but they can actually get a good feed on from that and may not bite. don't know that this is of any use to you all, but there it is.
