Had racing/working whippets for 15 years i've never heard of that Affix before?.

Whippets make great working dogs (rabbit/rats day/night) they will takle bigger stuff but most dont have the size or weight to deal with the bigger stuff cleanly.

All whippets given the opertunity and training will work and work very well.

Sooty Sam lines work well (I dont own any sooty sam breeding) but lack early pace and top speed.

A lot of sooty Sam line bred bitch's have been going out to Kc Pedigree Racing Whippets the results being you get a faster worker but they still seem to have the staying ability that the Sooty Sam lines are renowned for.

i have a whippetxgrayhound she will be one in december. i think that if you want one for ferreting you cannot go wrong with this cross mine is 23 1/2 inches to shoulder she is a good lamping dog. good at ferreting not bad at bushing bags of stamina i dont think you can go wrong with this cross but when it comes to fox its more like baiting one than acctuley killing one. mine dont retrive though but not really botherd :11:

I have a non-ped whippet and a pure whippet, my non-ped out shines my pure every time! she's not at all scared to get stuck in and have a go at anything, where as my pure whippet won't go threw bushes or jump over fences etc

but he is great on the open runs, as is my whippet/grey bitch, so my non-ped bitch flushes the bunnies out and then my pure whippet lad takes over and runs them down, he's also quite good at retriving them, but my bitch is better and faster, they do work well as a team though ;)

i have a pedigree whippet (sooty sam lines ) and a non pedigree( racing lines ) the ped has got a better nose and will go through anything where as the non ped is much stronger. i use the non ped for lamping as it seems to be able to take the knocks better the only trouble with peds is they dont like the cold much as they have a very thin coat dosent bother them when they are moving about but they look like they are going to shiver to death when ferreting

I suppose it's what lines you use, my pure whippet is from racing stock and is rubbish if the rabbits are not in the open, while my non-ped bitch has sooty sam lines and is dream to work, and yes poacherjim, my pure whippet is a wuss in the cold :11: he shivers from head to toe!

Depends on the individual whippet, mine will wilt on cold & windy days so I run her with a jacket on. Her full brother is a different animal and the weather doesn't bother him

She will get stuck into cover and brambles and apart from breaking a toe when she was a pup has been injury free.

Forget the Laguna prefix, it is old hat.........just look through the whippet coursing form books.

Pick a big pup from racing or coursing lines, start early and have fun!!

Thank you all very much for all your info. :good:

A great responce, what more could you ask for, from a great forum. :)

It will ither be a good strong whippet, whippetx greyhound, or generation bred coillie lurcher to lurcher pup, for ferreting purposes. ;) Although, its looking more like a good whippet.

Cheers,

frank, try looking on the real whippet forum www.therealwhippetforum.com i think some good examples of what whippets can do on there, hope it helps

i was just going to say have a look here

http://www.thewhippetforum.com/

:11:

if i could i would have a whippet, my first lurcher was a whippet/greyhound hybrid, she threw more to the greyhound....i saw my bitches grandmother run and she was a decent dog (whippet) although she had bad feet :o but i think that was an exception to the rule as none of her pups inherited her weak feet and all the other whippets i have seen have had nice tight feet.......i would say yes get a whippet...

if it is KC registered, if you breed from her you also make more from the pups......... :11: so that would offset the extra initial cost :) obviously presuming you use a KC stud and register the litter..

there appears to be loads of working KC whippets so the option is there

I have 2 non-peds they are both good little lamping dogs and good for ferreting they are both only young so not had that much experience yet, they are really coming on.

The fawn bitch is 19" and 16 months old just started retrieving to hand, never thought she would.

the white bitch is 20.5" haven’t done much with her yet as she’s only just 12 months, she seems to be almost a natural retriver, did not take much training with her. They never seem to get cold unlike the peds and do the job just as well if not better. I no its not normally a huge issue when choosing a dog but they are are half the price of peds.
