matt_hooks 188
Does anyone know what chronographs are good? I've had a good old google, and there's b####r all about them on there. If anyone knows where I can purchase one at a reasonable price I'd be grateful. I want to check my air rifles for shot to shot velocity consistency, and to make sure they're not exceeding the legal limit. If possible for a sensible price, I'd also like something that'll handle full bore, .243 mainly, but obviously that's a different ball game so if it's not feasible to measure both with one piece of kit then I'll just stick to the air rifle one. I'd like a chrono that I can link to my laptop, but again if it raises the price too much then I'll give it a miss. Not too difficult to type speeds in to Excel after all! If anyone is near Newbury and has one that they might be able to lend me, I'd happily supply a few beers in exchange! Quote Link to post

If anyone is near Newbury and has one that they might be able to lend me, I'd happily supply a few beers in exchange! Look on the Midway UK website. I bought a 'ProChrono Digital Chronograph' from Cabelas in the USA by mailorder (I paid about £100 I think?), anyway to answer your main point my chrony will measure velocity of just about anything squirted through the 'sky screens', including airguns, centrefires and even shotguns, (get close though you don't want to blast your latest toy into next week). Easy to use, and 'muppet' proof (just as well). Also now we are doing 'sums' to calculate ft/lbs Multiply the velocity (measured on your new chronograph) by itself (i.e. Squared) then multiply that answer by the Bullet/Pellet weight in Grains, then divide that by 450240. This will give you the ft/lbs energy of that particular combination. I.E. my .270 shoots at 3,000 ft per second, with a 110 grain bullet, 3,000 x 3,000 x 110 divide by 450240 = 2198 ft/lbs EASY PEASY (i.e. don't stand in the way I think?). AF Quote Link to post
HUnter_zero 58
I use a Chrony, easy to connect to the laptop. In fact I have three Chrony Chronographs. One I use on the bench, the other down by the target and I came by a third due to luck. I've had no problems shooting .177 pellets right up to .308 (and a few above) but it didn't like a .17HMR at all. Try to stay away from chronographs with small apertures, you will end up shooting it! I might have shot my original chronograph John Quote Link to post
markha 99
Combro CB625 chrony Mk4 is what I have, OK so its for .22 air rifle but its got a pretty large diametre in between the sensors, just measure it and 10mm dia projectile would give enough clearance. You simply enter the weight in grains of your load and then shot away, readings in fps and ftlbs. Loads of reviews on the web about them. Quote Link to post

I've got a combro, but because it straps on to the end of the barrel, I'd not be very happy strapping it to the end of a .243, reckon the muzzle flash would melt it in no time! Brilliant tool for air rifles though! As for the others, thanks for the advice, I'll give them a look! Quote Link to post
jackg 7
I use a chrony F1 and a cable made by "stot" on airgunbbs to connect it to the laptop. Quote Link to post
