arveyboy 0
i had my feo come over this morning to talk about the removal of my mentoring condition and opening of my certificate. it seems the mentoring condition will be saying farewell however he said the boss may be reluctant to open my certificate based on how much ive shot. now ive had at least 1500 rounds through the .17hmr and about 100 through the .243 i didnt think it would be much of a problem but clearly theyre getting stricter. we also had a chat about the cumbria tragedy and it seems theyre being very cautious. if you get caught fighting the police will now be straight around your house. seems sensible to me Quote Link to post
matt_hooks 188
So you having a mentoring condition on your cert is going to stop you turning batshit crazy, taking the guns out on your own and shooting a load of people? What a load of old tosh! Frankly the tragedy in Cumbria is nothing to do with the firearms licencing people. It doesn't give them carte blanche to slap arbitrary conditions on legal shooters as the whim strikes them! Is your mentoring condition just on the .243, or on the .17 too? With that many rounds fired, I would suggest that you are more than capable of judging a safe shot v's an unsafe one! As far as safety goes, the number of rounds fired is irrelevant imho. You could fire 10000 rounds and still not be any safer than a complete beginner who takes the time and effort to learn all about their rifle and ammunition. In fact "familiarity breeds contempt" so a new shot is likely to be more cautious than a highly experienced shot! Anyway, good luck with getting the conditions lifted. If they're not looking like playing ball, it might be worth talking to your choice of shooting organisation! Quote Link to post
arveyboy 0
no its just on the .243. ive had the .17 since 2 decembers ago and the .243 for just over a year. they said there wont be a problem taking the mentoring condition off but theyre probably going to be difficult about opening my cert up. not really sure why as i thought it was general consensus that after a year of having a certificate if you ask it to be opened up more often than not they will Quote Link to post
matt_hooks 188
There's no "consensus" in firearms licencing mate. It all depends on the flavour of police force you have. I don't know how Northamptonshire are, but whether they decide to open the cert or not is entirely up to them. They are supposed to operate to HO guidelines, but they must be really badly written, as each force seems to interpret them differently. You could argue that they are only guidelines, and that they can change them if the situation dictates, but then you try and get them to do something they don't want to do that might be slightly outside the HO guidelines, and watch them lean on the guidelines to defend their decision! Sorry to rant, but certain firearms departments seem to have forgotten that they are supposed to in general support legal, safe shooting. They seem to see it as their job to limit shooting as much as possible. This is not the right attitude, and sometimes they need reminding of that! Quote Link to post
