First time out with the .22

Recommended Posts

Went out last night for the first time with my mentor and his son ( aged 10 ) i took the .22 CZ 511 Subsonic and my mentor took his fox gun, which is a Tikka M595 .222 with a Bushnell Elite 3200 and a Pred 8 Wildcat Mod, and its one HELL of a piece of kit.

Went went to a near by permission for some foxs and i took the .22 to get some practice in with it, for when i get mine., and my mentor wants to make sure im safe, which he im glad to tell you thinks i am . Any way.

Got there at 8 in the evening and went to look for some foxs that might be sat out in the sun, i had loaded up the 8 shot mag and my brand new MTM .22 bullet holder which i was very pleased about ( hardly noticed it in my pocket ) we sat on top of this small valley which my mentor told me he used to get a good number of fox's here with his .22 with hypers in, they come so close to you its easy as pie he said. So i was calling for about 20 mins and nothing showed, so we moved on and on the way i noticed a small group of rabbits running into the gorse bush about 40 yards away, and i told my mentor and he said " make sure its a safe shot if you are gunna shot one" so i did, and put the multi x on the rabbits head and pulled the trigger, silent but deadly the 40 grain sub sonic CCI found its mark and bowled the rabbit over. One in the bag.

Moving on the next set up point which normally holds 2 or 3 families of foxes its a HUGE bank covered in gorse bushes and i mean huge. Its must be half a miles squared. As we were walking along the top of it, we noticed about 50 rabbits in the corner of the field running into the gorse and there was LOADS. So we sat down and i started calling for about 15 mins and then we see foxy poke his head out of the gorse bush. My mentor Aims and it seems like a houre has gone by before he shoots and he lets of a SWEET sounding .222 40 grain SP thats hissing towards him and THWACK, The shot went a bit low, he let the rifle drop a bit as he pulled the trigger and it must have hit him low, but he was sat down and the bullet must have hit his chest and this made the f****r run back into the gorse .

10 Minutes went by with out a sign of him and rabbits now were hoping around the edge of the gorse. These were about 140 yards away, and one hopped about 100 yards away and my mentor said " go on, have a go" so lent the rifle on my knee as i was sat on the floor, and out the cross about an inch above his head, squeezed the trigger and bwmf, over he went. The rabbits that were further away didn't know what was going on and lifted their head for a second and went back to feeding.

There was one rabbit about a few more yards than the previous one i shot and my mentor spotted it and said shoot that one, and i thought he was having a laugh, " its too far i said" and he said put the cross 2" above his head. So i got into position, 2" above his head and let the bullet fly, with in a millie second i see the rabbit just flop over and i was gob smacked. We counted the paces and the closer one was 104 yards and the second was 128 YARDS i was over the f*****g moon. 128 YARDS i had never done any shot like it and it was great fun.

Im going out lamping rabbits tonight with my mentor so he can teach me rifle safety in the dark and how to judge a safe shot. So expect some pictures lads and ladies ( sorry theres not pictures for this one, i forget my phone :icon_redface:

Thanks, Whippeter
