YOKEL 2,244
This seems to be the latest craze, cross breeding, then giving the resulting pups a fancy name, then selling them on for large sums. seen beagle x russles, bichon frieze x king charles spaniels, labra f*****g doodles...the list is endless, all making £500 + a pup. in my day they were 2 bob mutts...ho hum. chimp 299
i noticed someone has written a book on 'labradoodles'
stroller 341
tell me about it i have a labradoodle and a golden doodle, £500 and £600 each respectively . But by buying them i was allowed two lurchers without any fuss as the missus wanted them and at the end of the day they are worth what people will pay for them. Labradoodles goldendoodles cockapoos etc do shed there coats and arent allergen free, the former two are fairly large to medium dogs with loads of energy and working potential, and as a result they are also joining lurchers in rescue centres as people dont realise that these big mongrels take a lot of looking after. There is now a rescue society for these crosses and my family have rescued and fostered a fair few dogs before the society has re homed them, This is Bob the labradoodle retrieving at a game fair last year he is a brilliant big intelligent dog and by far the best dog ive owned. and the blonde one is betty and one of the best game finding dogs ive had if her head will fit in a bush she is in and working, unfortunately she is white which means a weekly bath. She isnt as responsive as bob and tends to work for herself rather than me but she has been warned by the missus to be a good girl. Rio hog mate its horses for courses, live and let live, etc etc some people would think your mad for importing a strain of saluki from abroad and the costs involved. at harewood i was talking to a guy with a rare long haired pointer that he had brought from germany part trained and was sending back to be fully trained at the cost of 1000s of euros, i thought it was a bit excessive and the dog isnt a recognised breed officially a mongrel but hey it isnt stopping either of you spending your money. Helen 2
These non shedding dogs its a load of crap. The hair still falls out it just stays on the dog as does a Poodles, if you don't brush them it felts up into an absolute mess that won't brush out. I'm sure there are some nice Labradoodles out there but all the ones I've met are hyperactive and not a patch on a pure bred Poodle or Labrador. The price of some of them you could buy a Lab and a Poodle for the cost of one Labradoodle pup!
riohog 5,707
stroller exactly mate . it wont effect me atall .but just felt that the sales pitch of not shedding there coats and so on does not justify those kind of figures but hey if you wont one yes you are right choices . !!! steveS.Yorks 161
Well i kind of like the look of Bob,mayebe as someone said earlier it could be better health wise to have a cross? Maybe breeding lab/poodles as gundogs could be a good idea? I dont really care whats in my dogs as long as they do a reasonable job of it,recently made up my mind i wouldnt have another purebred dog, bitsa's from now on.
stroller 341
Helen you are absolutely correct about there coats its a myth, the last pup we rescued had been sold on that basis to a woman who suffered badly with eczema when i went to pick the pup up she was absolutely distraught that it had to go but her face hands and arms were weeping with open cracks the eczema had flaired up in response to the pup. They are no more hyper than border collies or some of the pointer breeds and certainly no more active than my kelpie x grew. i know a lot of people with poodle crosses now through the society. and really no 2 dogs look alike but they all need socialising and training to get the best out of them. as for the price well if they were cheaper maybe we would be seeing more of them in rescue centers? i really dont know, its a craze just like bull xs, dogue de bordeauxs, american bulldogs, presa canarios, the list is endless. dogs unfortunately become a status symbol for people who crave self worth and adoration and get it through their dogs. My missus bought bob cos she wanted a cuddly disney dog how wrong was she!!! he is a big powerful dog so even her perception was wrong however we saw his potential and i wouldnt swap him for any money. Helen 2
Your dogs are very lucky to end up in a home were they are worked and occupied. We see a lot of these dogs that come in to be trained that have gone to the wrong home and ended up in rescue or worse. The last woman who came along with a Labradoodle bought it because she wanted a dog that was not aggresive to other dogs and had been told the Poodle cross would ensure this! I know several Poodles who love a good scrap lol her dog was dog aggresive.
