Early start

Recommended Posts

Well i decided to get up at early today and go back to the garden permission i was at last week for a few hours or so. So i got up at 3.45 and was there for 4.20. Parked the car where i normally do and walked round to his garden. When i got there there was 3 rabbits on the far side of the garden, but they done the off sharpish.

So i decided to set up within range of where i seen them and wait.

This is where i was shooting from, shit pic as it was taken on an iphone

I had been waiting for about half an hour or so when i seen a pair of ears on the far side of the driveway. Watching it through the scope, it started hoping directly towards me. I didnt want it to get to close as this would have been much closer that my zero range and may have been a harder shot. But it stopped, lined it up in the cross hairs and bang! One rabbit down :gunsmilie:

A short while later another one hoped onto the driveway, within range. I thought it looked a bit further than my zero so gave it about a half mildot over, and the pellet flew right over its head and hit a backstop behind it :wallbash: i had overestimated the range.

After about 20 mins i decided to go for a walk round his garden and into the woods. I set up outside a burrow i have shot one at before but only stayed for 5 mins. I thought i best go back to the garden as im wanting to try and decrease the number of rabbits coming into his garden, as i think they are coming from land outside his garden, the only burrows in his garden look empty, and i know they have been ferreted before.

So i went back and set up in the same spot. Not sure how long i was waiting but all of a sudden 1 rabbit came bounding though the gates and into the growth to the right of me, quickly followed by another. I could see one and managed to turn round and get it in the cross hairs, but the pellet flew straight over its head, looks like it was closer than i thought and didnt give it and hold under :wallbash: I will defo be investing in a rangefinder some time soon.

This ended up not being a bad thing, as the noise of the pellet hitting a tree sent one of the rabbits bolting into the garden, right infront of me, more or less bang on my zero :) it sat still, head up and side on to me, i couldnt have asked for a better shot, so i pulled the trigger and that was the, bunny on its side with a bit of leg twitching :gunsmilie:

I went a quick walk round the garden to see what i could see but there was nothing so i returned. After a while of waiting i spotted a bunny coming through the gates and it hoped into around the same spot that i got bunny number 1, ideal. So lined up the shot and bunny number 3 was in the bag. I stayed another 20 mins or so which took me to about 7 oclock and headed for the car.

When i got there i could see a rabbit in the woods but it was off before i could load the gun. I decided to go for a quick walk up and down the woods before i left. I must have seen at least 8 rabbits on my short walk but its always the same in there, they always see me before i see them. I find it hard to walk through the woods quietly with all the branches n stuff its hard to avoid standing on.

When i got back to the car i seen a fox in the field on the other side of the road, being pestered by a crow. Little did he know there were 3 meals sitting on the ground on the other side of my car :tongue2:

Some pics below

A pic i took of the fox but not sure if you will be able to see him as it was far away at this point and pic was taken on crappy iphone cam. its on the right of the post

I got home, gutted and skinned them and sat them in a bucket of salt water and went to bed, to be woken by my mum telling me the 2 dogs had got to them and helped themselves to one each!! :censored: ah well, it was a good morning and 3 less bunnies to be wrecking the garden

Cheers

Excellent shooting, don't worry about the misses, we've all had many from under/over estimation

Good job the dogs waited until you had gutted em though or yer mum would be chucking cold water on you to wake you up to clean up the mutt-spew from the carpets

Cheers lads.

Rossy, yeh defo gettin a range finder at some point. Most of my shooting is static so would b good to range different areas so i know hold over/under when rabbits pop up in different places.

Shay, yeh not a bad bag, not the biggest but its my biggest so far, and potential for bigger bags in the future. Me and scotty will be hittin the bunnies hard in the future once hes got the silencer. I didnt think it was a good idea to use the ultra this morning without it as i was ther very early and was shooting right outiside the house so didnt want to make too much noise

yes was my thoughts. hate kicking my self for missing thing due to my miss judgement of distances. good bags could have been so much bigger.

guntuff lazer range finder, what iv been looking at good for the money and well tested by some of the regs on hear like shay zinz's.

If you find the Guntuff ones out of stock, often are as very popular, you can look at the Longridge one on Amazon.

What you actually get is a unit that is exactly the same as the Guntuff one only in matt black.

Absoluteley identical bit of kit in every way to the Guntuff, I have used both often, and at a similar price too.

Just an alternative to consider.

By the way the one I have used reads down to 8yards too.
