MOO 730
I used to stay in the highest house in the uk .....that was right up as far into the highlands as you can get and we used to catch a few mink every year from a small burn that ran past the lodge ....they say that mink are never more than a mile away from water but you are never realy more than a mile away from water of some form no mater where you are in the uk ....so you could say they will be found pretty much every where Quote Link to post
DUCKWING 302
WELL LADS , I THINK YOU MAY HAVE READ MY POST WITHOUT REALLY READING IT ..... .... AS A LONG TIME POULTRY KEEPER ....... ANYTHING ....... AND I MEAN ANYTHING THAT COULD OR WOULD EAT THEM WAS KILLED ASAP ! NOW THEN ... MOST IF NOT ALL POULTRY KEEPERS ARE FIGHTING A NEVER ENDING WAR ON PREDATORS ..... THEY ARE CONSTANTLY TRYING OUT DEFENSES AND ROUTES TO A TAKEAWAY ! AND AS SUCH SHOULD BE CULLED ..... HOWEVER ... OVER 30 ODD YRS IVE SEEN A LOT OF THINGS YOU FELLAS WOULDNT BELIVE WHEN A PREDATOR HAS BEEN FACED WITH A HUGE AMOUNT OF PREY SPEICES IN A CONFINED AREA ...... THAT INCLUDES AN ISLAND FULL OF NESTING BIRDS .... FOR INSTANCE ..... OVER A THOUSAND POULTS KILLED BY A GROUP OF 3 PINE MARTINS WHICH WERE JUMPING FROM A BRANCH NO THICKER THAN A PENCIL OVER AN ELECTRIC FENCE ..... OVER 500 POULTS KILLED BY A FAMILY OF FECKIN HEDGEHOGS LIVING IN A PILE OF LOGS IN THE RELEASE PEN ...... 280 DUCKS KILLED IN A NIGHT BY AN OTTER ....... MOO 730
Fair enough DW but like you have said I have seen with my own eyes not what ive read or heard from other people as for pine martins I have quite alot of experiance with the em also when keepering in the highlands and I can honestly say they were not a predatious as mink thats just my experaince ....in fact an old stalker used to say he didnt mind a few pine martins as they keeped the hoodie crows under control by preying on there eggs and chicks as they nest as you know on solitary trees on the hill ....how much truth in this and imo there is not much worse than a pair of hoodies on a grouse moor...I dont know but he was a n old time keeper that had seen it all and done it all Edited June 22, 2010 by MOO Quote Link to post

If I'm not mistaken that was taken from a programme filmed on a stretch of river where they are hoping to encourage water -voles! When I saw the 2 mink take the 2collared doves it was just as quick . I take my hat off to you Duck wing . 60 mink this season . That is proper control Whoever was doing it in the past must have really let things slip .
