bigbailey 90
Bit more advice needed please. Let my rescue lurcher off for the first time up the quarry where there is plenty of rabbits about. She is normally good on recall but once she got scent of a rabbit she just took off. Is this just something i have no control of in the breed or is there away to stop it??. If there is anyone in the midlands area who can show me how to go on with her for ferreting or lamping that will be a great help as im new to lurchers. Used to my gundogs. Thanks people???? Like i said im knew to lurchers but hope this helps a little. Quote Link to post
Tiff 36
is her recall 100% in the home/garden/on lead before you are trying it off lead? Quote Link to post
bigbailey 90
is her recall 100% in the home/garden/on lead before you are trying it off lead? Yes she comes back everytime i call her inside the home or garden or in a confined field where there is no distraction. Quote Link to post
Tiff 36
what about on walks on leash where there ARE distractions? You could start adding those distractions, take her on the walk before you've fed her so she is a bit hungry, have a pocketful of kibble and see how that goes. Quote Link to post

Shes fine on walks apart from if she sees rabbits or squirrels or something small and fury then she does the obvious and wants to catch it. Cant see me knocking that out of her thats what they were bred for. Quote Link to post

Yes she comes back everytime i call her inside the home or garden or in a confined field where there is no distraction. It'll take over a month to form any sort of bond with her, if you let her off before she thinks its in her best interest to come to you , she's gone, she needs working with but not somewhere infested with bunnys at the minute and not in the garden, you need to create some sort of motivation for her to come back when called, i'd use a long line with her for the minute, and make it worth her while coming back, i wouldn't advise force , where the bond is not formed between you and her, dont worry bout hunting for the moment, get her right first, Just a question why didn't ya buy a pup,, Quote Link to post

Worked in kennels mate thats the reason why i didnt get a pup. Dont get me wrong that would of been the easy option for me. But like i said i see all the dogs that come in which people ruin and pass on so just decided to give this one another chance. Quote Link to post
Tiff 36
nothing wrong with that, you just have to change training tactics a bit! Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Like has been said, and similar to gun dogs, work up - adding distractions in a controlled manner. You could try taking her out on a long training lead into an area where there is sent and doing some re-inforcing training. However with most sight hounds - if it gets up in front of them and runs and its a designated quarry species . . . .stopping them is hard and fairly counter productive. Quote Link to post
malc1 544
is the dog full of beans and fresh when she does it if so try takeing her out and if you have a bike run her at the side of you till shes tired then take her into the field a dog that is full of beens wont listen till it gets it out of its system Quote Link to post
fensaluki 35
Keep asking, listening & learning fella and all will come good in the end...I Dont think there will be many that have been in the real dog world for a long time that has'nt seen a rescue dog that not many gave a lot of hope to turn into a realy handy dog at some time or another ATB Quote Link to post
