feedsing ferrets

hello all,

 

Do you feed your ferrets just befor u go out or the day befor and then not feed them in the morning or what. im just wondering what makes the best worker and the lowest of lay ups.

would you want to go out to work on an empty stomach

 

if your feeding meat, then feed the night before, wake them the next morning, let them have a shite before boxing up

I feed mine the day before and thats' it. A ferret that is a bit hungry, works better i find and quicker. A fat well fed ferret, mucks about and in my opinion does not work right.

I feed mine the night before then just go ferreting but if its a full days ferreting we give them a break for a couple of drinks of water

I give mine a decent feed the night before. I also wake them up an hour or so before we are heading out and give them a light feed with maybe a bit of egg. . . . i expect my breakfast before a days work so they get the same. I also give them some bits of meat and glugs of ferretone throughout the day, a long with water when they seem to need it, if its dry. Although they will hunt for food, i reckon with a good ferret they hunt due to instinct and because they enjoy it. Mine seem to hunt just as hard having a feed and i've never had a ferret lie up due to eating a rabbit below ground. I think if you have to keep your ferret hungry to make it work well . . . . it isn't that good.

Always feed mine before i go and it doesnt make any difference to how hard they work. They dont stop with any kills they make either so it cuts right down on digging

always feed mine before i head out ferreting... have it as part of the routine... if the dogs see the ferrets getting fed they know whats happening

I always feed before hunting...I would not hunt with a ferret that needed to be hungry for it to work well.

A good working ferret should hunt for fun not because its hungry ,just like a cat

thanks for evryones advise on this i think i will give them there main meal the night befor then a light mean of rabbit in the morning a hour or so befor i go out. Sorry about all the questions as this is my first time keeping ferrets. one of my ferrets has now just had 6 kits a few days ago but the sexes are not yet known due to not wanting to disturb the mother. So if anyone would like some ferret kits in the nest 6-8 weeks and live in the cornwall area then drop me a pm. they are all free to good homes.
