Judges for All Ireland Terrier & Lurcher Championships

Recommended Posts

In line with the objectives of the Great Game Fairs of Ireland team and the Mid Antrim Working Terrier & Lurcher Club to organise not only the best terrier and lurcher events in Ireland in terms of prize funds and facilities but also the most reputable events we are delighted to announce that at each of our two major events the 22nd All Ireland Terrier and Lurcher Championships at Shanes Castle on the 27th June and the ROI Terrier & Lurcher Championships at Birr Castle on the 29th August we have put in place judges whose integrity is beyond reproach. And for both events we will be using a top Irish judge and a top UK specialist judge.

For Shanes Castle the Terrier judge is Joe Kyrollos from Scotland, a well known judge of working terriers of all breeds, and the lurcher judge is our own John Humphreys who has carried the Irish flag successfully to shows all over the UK and Ireland.

The two judges will jointly judge the overall Champion (Best in Show) from the Champion Terrier, the Champion Whippet and the Champion Lurcher.

For our new Champion Puppy Overall - Tom Chalmers aka Foxgun Tom will do the honours.

At Birr the roles are reversed with a top Irish Terrier Judge and a top UK Lurcher Judge.

Des Macken is judging the ROI Championships. Des like Seamus Erwin our Terrier Director has won most of the big championships. He is well known for the quality of his terriers and we felt it was time to show that there are good Irish judges about. There is a three judge and referee system for the Final of the Five Nations Championships. The lurcher judge wishes to keep their identity a secret but is a well know lurcher enthusiast from the UK.

If you can tell me a 'working terrierman' who has done more winning at the top level than Des or Seamus we will certainly consider them. BUT these are shows they are not tests of working competence although this is something we are working on for the future. Shows cannot test working ability - terriers can only be judged on conformation and who better to judge that than someone who has done a lot of winning and who actually has dogs with a good conformation.

The two 'wing' judges to Foxgun Tom in the final have impeccable working credentials.

the reason he wins a lot of shows is because he brings a van full to each show he attends i know its not a test for workin dogs but at least pick a judge who stll works his terriers who are the wing judges then do they work there dogs or just show them like des macken

He still has to have good dogs. I know from judging occassionally at dog shows and showing dogs myself some time ago, loads of people who had car loads of dogs who never won anything. The fact that Des has won all over the place and at the highest level shows he has good dogs.

As I have said before on this forum all the retrievers and setters I ever showed did work as well and most won tests and ran and were placed in trials. BUT although I did win occassionally at the highest level including a third in the top class at Crufts I recognised that in terms of conformation, breed type etc I was at a disadvantage. When I occasionally did win well under the older judges I was delighted but I didn't lose any sleep if I didn't win and stood behind more show type dogs. Where I did compete well was in working tests and trials where the show dogs were at a total disadvantage.

However is it not good news for you that Des can't take a van load of terriers to Birr!

The UK 'wing' judge with Tom has not been selected yet and the other one based in Ireland has a strong reputation as a working dog man. Their identity will be revealed on the day.

If you don't want to try qualifying under DEs there are opther shows where you can qualify including Shanes.
