Bosun11 537
Training & excercise.....! Do 'em both as much as possible. Keep your pup busy. lab's have a justified reputation for chewing but as with any other breed it's usually simulation (or the lack of it) thats the cause. The good thing is, you'll get out what you put in. You can also, as there's nowt worse than seeing a well built kennel being rendered into splinters, put anti chew strips (I have used metal corner stuff for plastering, with good results) around doors & wood edging. Best of luck Quote Link to post
higgins 75
As Bosun says give it plenty of exercise and physical stimulation so it will at least be too tired to chew your kennel to bits, but i would also give it plenty of tasty knuckle bones to keep it occupied, Higgins Quote Link to post
Lloyd90 509
I have also heard to add the metal strips around the corners to stop them eating the wood, also you could attack mesh onto the door if he's ripping into it with his claws Quote Link to post
higgins 75
Some dog's may actually injure themselves with too many protective metal edges,in my case the dog is trying to escape when fireworks or thunderstorms frighten him, Higgins Quote Link to post
Dave C 63
I use spare angle iron from work with no rough edges, i put it on all the corners and exposed from, i also put some around the opening of the kennel and a drip hood on the top to keep most of the weather out. william slater mcgregor 2
i once seen an old lab trainer putting creosote on his kennels, when i asked him why ,he says it stopps dogs from chewing the wood i tried it and hey bingo it worked a treat, he also stated that dogs dont have a sense of taste if they like the smell of something they will eat or chew it,i also wouldnt give it anything sticks or bones to chew on as your only encouraging it to chew even more,if your going to use it for shooting it might make it hard mouthed atb Quote Link to post
todd 5
What iv done is ply line and dress all the internal area, always found this works and stops the dogs chewing or clawing as they slip of ply!!! And if any out side woods getting wrecked. dress it in fine chicken wire. atb Quote Link to post
hily 380
as it's a gun dog if you remove it's teeth you not only stop it from chewing the kennel you also make it a soft mouthed retriever the advice about protecting the corners is the way to go the pup will soon get fed up and forget about chewing. atb. Born Hunter 17,798
i once seen an old lab trainer putting creosote on his kennels, when i asked him why ,he says it stopps dogs from chewing the wood i tried it and hey bingo it worked a treat, he also stated that dogs dont have a sense of taste if they like the smell of something they will eat or chew it,i also wouldnt give it anything sticks or bones to chew on as your only encouraging it to chew even more,if your going to use it for shooting it might make it hard mouthed atb The dog isnt chewing because it particularly wants to destroy its kennel. Dogs chew to relieve tension and stress, the act of chewing releases calming hormones. If the dog wasnt stressed, it wouldnt chew. All dogs need something to chew for this reason, keeps them happy. Obviously however chewing up the kennel isnt good. As has already been said, sounds like the dog needs more training and exercise than its getting. But might also be worth getting it a big rope toy to chew and give it bones now and again. Like i said dogs chew to releive tension, how would you feel if when you were stressed and anxious you were forced to just sit down and do nothing? Everyone needs a stress relief, chewing is a dogs stress releif. Quote Link to post
