destroying his kennel!

Recommended Posts

:censored:

my 7 near enough 8 month old lab has taken a likeing to wood! all the edges have angling on them, the wire is on the inside of his run, so he has desided to start digging into the walls, and his door!

i gave him a branch to munch of for today untill i get down to the butchers tomorow.

but what im wanting to know is how i can stop him digging/scratching into the wall & door

Training & excercise.....! Do 'em both as much as possible. Keep your pup busy. lab's have a justified reputation for chewing but as with any other breed it's usually simulation (or the lack of it) thats the cause.

The good thing is, you'll get out what you put in.

You can also, as there's nowt worse than seeing a well built kennel being rendered into splinters, put anti chew strips (I have used metal corner stuff for plastering, with good results) around doors & wood edging.

Best of luck ;)

I use spare angle iron from work with no rough edges, i put it on all the corners and exposed from, i also put some around the opening of the kennel and a drip hood on the top to keep most of the weather out.

Hi bud had a springer the very same. The fecker destroyed my pens. Its party piece was eating the frame at the bottom of the gate so it could pull up the weir.Had to put it in a metal shed in the end.Could see the point if it was never walked.atb. Catcher.thumbs.gif

put metal on all exposed angles and even 1mm plate on walls or try a bit of tobasco sauce on his favourite chewing areas

go and get yourself some skim beads from any builders merchants there about a quid for an 8ft length or depending on size of wood some external render bead same stuff but wider than the skim bead hope this helps with your problem

i once seen an old lab trainer putting creosote on his kennels, when i asked him why ,he says it stopps dogs from chewing the wood i tried it and hey bingo it worked a treat, he also stated that dogs dont have a sense of taste if they like the smell of something they will eat or chew it,i also wouldnt give it anything sticks or bones to chew on as your only encouraging it to chew even more,if your going to use it for shooting it might make it hard mouthed atb

What iv done is ply line and dress all the internal area, always found this works and stops the dogs chewing or clawing as they slip of ply!!! And if any out side woods getting wrecked. dress it in fine chicken wire. atb

as it's a gun dog if you remove it's teeth you not only stop it from chewing the kennel you also make it a soft mouthed retriever :whistling: the advice about protecting the corners is the way to go the pup will soon get fed up and forget about chewing. atb.

The dog isnt chewing because it particularly wants to destroy its kennel. Dogs chew to relieve tension and stress, the act of chewing releases calming hormones. If the dog wasnt stressed, it wouldnt chew. All dogs need something to chew for this reason, keeps them happy. Obviously however chewing up the kennel isnt good. As has already been said, sounds like the dog needs more training and exercise than its getting. But might also be worth getting it a big rope toy to chew and give it bones now and again. Like i said dogs chew to releive tension, how would you feel if when you were stressed and anxious you were forced to just sit down and do nothing? Everyone needs a stress relief, chewing is a dogs stress releif.
