i was out walking my dogs to day done a good long walk across the fields full of sheep or cattle and a few ponys. my dogs are 100percent with all live stock.well at least i taught they all where. my whippethound x bull took of across the field id say it was easyly a 1000yard dash caught up wit a ram on his own and had a bit of a scrap wit it let yous do the maths wat happened..didnt kill it ..anyway have this dog since he was a pup he now 3 year old.. i gave him the :boxing: will he do this again do i go back to basics or show him the gate :gunsmilie:

if he is a good working dog i would keep him and give him another chance. as the basics hasnt worked on this dog i would change my aproach and get a shock collar that should do the job tidy.imo

Get him on a rope, take him into as many tempting situations as you can find. If he looks at 'em, bollock him,if he chases, brace your self, and just before he gets to the end of the rope, scream, whatever you scream to stop him doing wrong. He will hear the command just before he comes to a violent halt, then call him in and praise him. Next time you do the same thing, except give the command in time to give him the opportunity to stop before he gets to the end of the rope. If that works just keep doing it till it sinks in . If it don't , repeat the first method a few more times so he gets the message. Mike.

Don't always work though , years ago I was with a mate who did just that, I thought the ram was going to kill the dog, sorted my mate thought,on the way home across the fields the dog pined another sheep not 10 minutes later!

Some people need to read the topic 1st before they start typing bull shit.

This is your dogs 1st time doing this and l hope the last hope yea give him a good shoeing for it but get him out in and about sheep again as soon as possable but in a place where if it goes wrong you can get it in control as fast as possable.

Remember it was a bull x that did this when was the last time it got to kill something because they do go off the rails abit if they dont get a kill every so often.

Hope it works out for you because yea have had him from a pup

Did you go by the farmers place to tell him what happened, appologize, pay any possible damages (offer he likely won't take)? The ram might need attention or at least a eye kept on it, and it might also give you a way to speak to him about properly breaking your dog to them. It is the right thing to do as far as coming clean to the farmer, he will likely appreciate the honesty and you would avoid someone else being blamed for your situation (such as "those damn lurcher lads/motor poachers/ etc"). Plus you never know who might have seen you.

have to agree shock collar is deffinatley the best option. alot of dogs will keep doing it if they see that taking a shout or a punch is worth the chase. a shock collar will very quickly let them know there getting punished for chasing sheep and its not tollorated. but dont mess about with the low settings put it right up and let them have it as soon as the first signs of them wanting or begining to chase them. trust after once or twice they should deffinately get the picture.

Tie him in a pen with a big tup after that a doubt he will look again! No but on a honest note as thats a bit cruel, do all as normal my bitch tried once as a pup and after a beating and good telling touch wood never again, but when ive been with other dogs all stock broken they have chased but never actually damaged because as soon i see what the intensions are i use my authority and the dog will turn back to me and cower knowing well her intesnisons were wrong very wrong!
