lamping question

ok went out for a shine lastnight with my mates hawk and have a few questions as we havent done this before, not really a hawking question so should get the answers i need here, when you see a rabbit in the distance say 2-300 yards away do you

 

a. keep light on it and walk nearer?

 

b. turn light off and walk to say 100 yards and turn on again and hope its still there?

 

c. none of the above, if so let me know please

 

We seen plenty but it was like herding sheep they just kept moving further away or going to ground only to come back again later once we had moved on.

I put the light out and walk nearer, then the odd flash to

check its still there, then as I get to about 50 yards I tend to keep it on it, if it hasnt already run.

i put the lamp of and walk up to it to about 20 yards depent on the condition

Yep pretty much the same as the above have said, however if the rabbit is looking likely to run I often keep the beam between the rabbit and the cover keeping the rabbit just outside the beam but not so much that you can't see it. I often find that will hold a rabbit back from running as they feel safer in the dark outside of the beam and dislike moving into the beam to make the cover.

depends on the weather pal if its windy or raining i tend to turn it of and get nearer as they wont hear you the same with the wind and the rain drowning out your footsteps .. but if its fairly still i keep the light on them as the beam seems to keep em still ..not always but most of the time..i suppose it depends on how lamp shy they are and what kind of terrain your on they tend to sit tighter if the ground is a bit rough..or the grass is a bit longer as the think you cant see them ..hope this helps pal .i no some people lamp different ways but how i do it seems to work for me...

cant go far wrong with the above answers if you can make sure the wind is in your face so harder for them to hear you.

i think this was the problem as there was no wind at all as when flying the bird the lesswind the better, it must have been too still, thanlks for the advice.
