Wondered why I'd been missing......

Recommended Posts

Hi, folks.

A few weeks back I took the 90 out to the estate to try to thin out the squidders in the main wood. First one showed, easy 20 yard shot.... missed :censored: Checked the zero and it was about an inch high and right. Re-zero'd scope and carried on.

No more rat's in party frocks that day but did take a bunny.

Assumed the scope must've taken a knock as it's not lost zero since it was fitted over 5 years ago.

The next time I used it was my first time on my new shoot last week. Me and my keeper mate parked up and there was a bunny about 15 yards away in the garden, sneacked round an outbuilding, took aim..... missed :censored: Checked zero and out by an inch high. Re-zeroed again and shot a kit a few mins after.

Going back there tommorow and want to use the 90 again so after the last two feck-ups, I checked the zero this eve in my garden, an inch high and left this time.

Whats happening is each time I zero the sights, the POI stays good for about a dozen shots, then moves randomly an inch or so in any direction. Stays the same for the next dozen or so, then does the same again. SH1TE!!!!!

It's a Walther 4-12x50 30mm IR and I really liked it. Bugger...... Wierd fault.

Anyway, I've taken the Leapers 2-7x32 off my RWS52 and fitted it to the 90. Set it up and practiced for and hour or so and now all's good. Really nice little scope.

Moral of the story..... Even if you're very confident in your set up, check before you hunt. Like I said, it's never lost zero over the 5 years it's been on the gun 'til now.

Cheers. :icon_redface:

Hi, Sweeney.

The scope came from Ramsbottom's and I know their after sale service it top notch, so I'll see what they say.

I really like the little Leapers scope, it's basic but the picture's very clear and I never tend to turn the mag higher than 6 anyway. I've a spare Luger 3-9x42 that I don't really like TBH but it'll do for now on the 52.

Was going to go to the new shoot this eve but it's p*ssing it down big style now. Hey ho.....

Cheers.

I had a similar thing mate with a Nikko Stirling Gold Crown, brillaint for 2 years then started doing that but a bit more subtle and in all directions!

Wasted alot of time trying to figure what was going on!

At least you know what it is now tho eh?

All the best

Jack

Hi, Jack.

Yeah, it's an odd fault. Normally when a scope goes wrong, it's shots all over the target not in tight little groups that move randomly around. New one on me.... :hmm:

Cheers.

Just a silly suggestion, but have you checked that the mount screws are still tight? I've seen similar faults as you describe because of a loose mounting screw.

Hi, Matt.

Yeah, I've gone through all the usual stuff. It's deffo a fault with the scope.

Cheers.

Aye. Not wishing to teach you to suck eggs, just always have to remind myself to check the basics before I get overly complicated. It's amazing how often a quick "is it plugged in?" gets a result! :wallbash:

You're right there, Matt.

I had a trigger problem a little while ago with my RWS52 after I'd given it a new spring and a service. It was fine before but after I'd put it all back together, it was bloody awful. Stripped it a couple more times to see if I'd done something daft but couldn't find anything wrong....

After much head scratching and an ask for help on here, I had a play with the adjuster screws and tuned it back in just fine.

Still don't understnd why it changed but like you say, check the basics first.

Cheers.

Hi

I had a similar problem with a scope on a springer. The fix was to unscrew the grub screw holding the zoom ring in place and push the zoom ring forward. This exposed 3 tiny grub screws that held the reticle in place an sure enough two were loose. Tightened these up the reticle was rock solid. The scope then needed re-zeroing but after that was fine.

Hope this helps in your case.

Nice one, fella!!

Tried that and two of the three little x-head screws weren't properly tight.

I'll try it back on the gun and hope for the best. If anyone from Ramsbottom's is reading this, I haven't really done that..... :whistling:

Cheers, Martin. :clapper:
