eel fishing

Recommended Posts

went down to lough neagh on thurs night around 9pm with a few friends to throw a couple of rods in for the eel. the wind was blowing a gale and didnt help much with the leger rods as the alarms and indicators were blowing and bleeping constantly. once it began to darken down my rod went first and that was it until we packed up just before dawn at 3.30am. between the two of us and another friend that was fishing close by we bagged in around twenty eel. my bag consisted mostly of bootlaces nothing really big but i'll keep them for pike bait as i threw the bigger ones on the pan.........yum yum yummie. my mate was using a small float fished overdepth and he caught the most and the biggest of us all. a few of his eel were well over the pound mark.......thanks..........MUDD DOG.... :victory::victory::victory:

wish we still had eels here , some twats thought it was a good idea to let mink out of fur farms years ago ,we are still reaping the rewards of there efforts , a gradual decline in numbers ,to the point that i have not had any for 2/3 years. tight lines all OGGY

Dont want to start any arguments lads but the Eel is in serious decline in British waters, efforts are being made to rectify this by the fisheries people, for instance elvers are being released and elver fishing licences are being bought out.

Its estimated that for an Eel to reach 5lb it takes a minimum of 75 yrs,so even a 2 pounder is probably 20+ yrs old, personally i dont kill any Eels but to kill a specimen is sacrelidge in my book, fish for them by all means but treat them with the respect they deserve and release anything over a pound, just my personal opinion.

no disrespect, but it doesnt take an Eel 10yrs per pound.

you are correct, they are on a major decline unfortunately.I have targeted the Eels for around 20 plus years and feel the elver fisherman and imigrants taking all they catch away to feed their fellow blood relations as they do all other species!

Rats are more common, why not eat them :big_boss:

no sweat pal im fully aware of this. naill has posted a good topic on this already. i fully agree with you'r opinion amd am aware of this myself since reading the other topic. ALTHOUGH since fishing for them recently and seeing fishermen :icon_eek: setting lines and traps on the shores of lough neagh i don't think a few lads with rods catching a few for the pan are the cause of the decline. there is a lot more bigger ''fish to fry'' than the common coarse angler that has respect for his game.

pardon the punn. :11:

correct me if im wrong i was under the belief that an eel of 1 lb weight was maybe 3-4 yrs old ???

That is true mate.yes they are fantastic eating but due to their decline and a fantastic fish in their own right,i only feel in fair we protect this fish until hopefully their numbers are on the increase before we all decide to start taking a few for Tea

No problem Earth,im just quoting what ive read,im no eel "expert" but it must take a while for eels to reach specimen weights, nobody would kill a 30lb Carp or 15lb Barbel,i just think eels deserve the same respect, personally i would rather fish for what i consider the last real mystery fish than something with a name,i would like my grandson to be able to do the same when im long gone, give them more value than a "meal" thats all im saying.
