Colster 1
Having changed my shotgun this week to own my first O/U I set up a day with a couple of mates to spend the day over on the farm giving it a good try out. We started off at 6am with my first go at shooting over decoys, it was ok but it wasn't about to overtake lamping with the LR in my book. It got to just after 10 and it became clear the pigeons weren't interested in food and were just looking for somewhere to sleep off breakfast, so we collected the decoys and the 18 pigeons shot thus far and set off to rough shoot round the various small woods and copses and decided to go drey poking. As we didn't have a lofting pole we "poked" them with a 12b cartridge, surely pest control shouldn't be this much fun. We had a small side bet going as to how many times we could hit a dead squirrel on it's way to the ground, we managed four but that did rely on a few branches along the way. Although the weather started a bit dreary, it cleared up and we ended the day with 20 pigeons, 9 squirrels, 4 rabbits, 4 jays and a crow. I have to say though I'm kinda hoping squirrel meat isn't up to much as I bought a few back to cook up and they are unbelievably difficult to skin, plus I think the first one I skinned was the "bet winning 4 hits before the ground" one. halamrose 24
You know to start to skin a squirrel cut round the back and root of the tail leaving it attached to skin forward of the tail. Stand on the tail holding back loges and pull. They make a nice little BBQ. Halam Quote Link to post

Think I'll be shooting some more squirrels now, very nice. Cheers! Quote Link to post
matt_hooks 188
That's a good vid, had a look at the one after, and then came across this. That's a good idea, saves so much time skinning! Wonder how it'd do on bunnies? Quote Link to post
