Have you ever lost ferrets when ferreting?

Hi, As im quite new to Ferreting I still sometimes get abit nervous when working them, only on big hedge rows and places that would be hard to dig to.

 

I dont know what would happen if I were to get a dig under a hedge, does this ever happen? because I bet digging under one of those would be a pain in the ass!

I once lost a good hob to a fox, the fox bolted with the net around his head and i had no gun with me, or no lurcher, i was thinking jeez he bolted a fox! when i dug to him he was dead, the fox had chomped him before he bolted, and it was,nt a very big bury either, i would never have thought it held fox.

if you ever do have a problem that its either to deep or to hard to dig, leave your ferret box outside the hole where you entered ya ferret, block the opthers up, and when you go back in the morning ypour ferret will be in his box fast asleep

I lost my best hob ferret about 3 weeks ago now, working a thistle bush, found his collar snagged up underground and had to dig anyways, still havent seem him and theres far to many warrens for him to stay put . As been said before just leave the box out for him/her and hope.

lost a ferret a few years ago. Keep a few tools in the car, machete, croppers, etc... then you can clear away any rough spots so you can get in the hedge

Can you get small locator collars for ferrets? I know they have them for terriers. Could be handy and save a lot of digging, but they'd be spendy too.

BEST THING TO DO MATE IS GO AND BUY A MINK LIVE TRAP CAGE, OR PREFABLY 2-3 REMEMBER TO COVER THEM SO THAT WHATEVER GETS COUGHT DOSNT GET SOAKED IF IT RAINS. SET THEM CLOSE TO THE AREA YOU LOST HIM PUT SOME BAIT IN , AND TRY AND GET IT IN SOME KIND OF SHELTERD PLACE.

 

I HAVE ALSO LOST A NUMBER OVER THE YEARS , THIS WAS IN THE DAYS BEFORE THE LOCATOR.

 

BUT I HAVE ALSO LOST ONE WITH A LOCATOR COLLAR ON ABOU 15 YEARS AGO . . LOST ONE ABOUT A MONTH AGO IT ESKAPED FROM THE CAGE IN MY VAN AND MANAGED TO GET OUT THE VAN SOMHOW WHILST IT WAS PARKED UP, THE FECKING THING THING ATE HALF MY LEMON DRIZZLE CAKE :sick: THAT WAS ON THE PASSANGER SEAT BEFORE IT FECKED OF

i mate me and blackpack was out ferreting one day then the last burrow we did was in a bank and i enterd

the ferret then 30secs after bang bang so we put another ferret in to try get it to bolt but it didnt so we dug and dug and it got to dark so we left a rabbit in the entrance and blocked all the holes up and went back the next morning and there was one of the ferrets fast asleep and then i looked and the polecat was nowere to be seen and i turned the box on and i gt a mark at 3 and half foot so i dug broke throw and there was the collar and no ferret she had manged to get it off and i looked every were for her but no luck

I had a burrow last year that i entered a jill in and the batteries must of gone in the collar, was a bit cheesed off as i usually go out with two or more ferts but on this occasion i took just the 1. So it was a case of quickly filling all the holes in and shooting back home for the other fert ( luckily i live 4 min away) anyway i got back collared up the other fert dug one of hole entrances back out and there she was waiting for me before i had the chance to enter the other fert.

To tell you the truth i would say that nine times out of ten when one goes quiet and doesn't appear i have found that the noise of the digging alone usually is enough to move them out of the nearest hole to the lay up, this season although it's early day's yet i've had 1 lay up, last year if i remember rightly i only had the one i dug right down 2 and that was it.

ive noticed the same, sometimes digging in hard ground will get them out as they must be curious and have a look, has worked for me before. I find sprinkling water in one of the entrances the most effective way, but its a lot hotter here then over there so may not be as efffective. water always works for me

not lost a ferret for a while ,usealy weathrs beat me on the hills ,so has bleepers and receiver boxes ,most of the ferrets ive had kill and move , most losses came before locators late seventies early eighties , had a locator then was a transisitor with a white stick,not very accurate as you picked up the afternoon football etc saw an old guy the other day with them priceless, should be in amuseum maybe the guy too, hees a fencer and has more land than you can imagine all the best

How did you manage that?

 

My Dad had ferreted for 20 years without locators and never lost a Ferret. I imagine thi sto be the exeption to the rule I suppose, Thats why im aking the question lol

You can only lose a good ferret that goes deep and does the job in my opion ,and the more you go out the more chance you got of losing them its hard on guys that just have one or two but theres loads of ways of getting them back guys did it for years before locators where even thought of
