Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Took a mate out last evening that has, in the past showed me some very good sport of one kind or another including a very good fallow buck . Went to a place that i know holds a good buck and a few elusive munties.Stopped on the way to watch a decent buck near another piece of ground i have but not on it Walked through the tall crops at our destination very slowly as its easy to miss a buck when the crops are like this. Not a thing until i glassed a patch of rough beside a field of barley and spotted a muntie although at the range we were it was unclear as to the sex as it was ass on . Stalked up a tram line that would take us somewhere near ,albeit in a roundabout way with the muntie unsighted all the way and the wind in our favour. As we neared the spot i sent my guest on ahead a bit with the sticks and saw him slowly mount the rifle .The .270 spoke and a thwack indicated a solid hit .A good sized muntie buck in velvet ,shot through the front of the head . Must admit to being a bit ignorant of muntie velvet growth but is this normal to have large hard nobules on top the velvet growth? Then in started to rain and we hurried back to the truck ,drove back and collected the buck . Still early so on to another place where i recently shot a nice young, tall 4 pointer . Did the big circuit seeing only two does on the run .Came to where i shot the munty and buck last and couldnt believe it when a young buck appeared on a banking opposite us,obviously replacing the fallen beast i had in double quick time and from a nearby planting ive no doubt . I suggested my guest get down on the bipod as it was a good range but do-able.The .270 knock him over nicely as expected and we shimmied across a gas pipe over a stream to get to him rather than walk the half mile to a bridge .Another youngster with a poor head but a result all the same .Darkness was coming fast as i set to and gralloched the beast .Very pleased to have shown a bit of sport and hope to get him back in the rut as my debt is greater than what ive shown so far . Perfectly normal mate, the beast has not long cast and the first thing to happen is for the pedicle crown to heal over then the process of antler growth starts, nice animal. Quote Link to post
